Anyone who knows me well enough knows that I'm not super-political. They also know that I was a tard and missed the registration deadline this year. They also know I would have voted Obama.
But that's not what I'm writing now about. I'm writing about how I'm getting tired of the following phrase: "I can finally be proud to be an American again."
Yes, our government fucked up over the last 8 years. But that's not what being an American is about. Americans are not defined by our current administration, but by the ideals this country was founded on. The idea that life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are things worth fighting for, that the things we believe in are OURS to defend, are OURS to promote. We did that this election - we proved that all men are created equal, and those of us who said "YES WE CAN" can now say "YES WE DID."
But if the only reason you can be a proud American is because we have a president who doesn't act like a fuckstick, then I think you need to reevaluate your patriotism.
As a nation, we've made our mistakes, but what nation hasn't? You don't love something because it has no flaws, you love something in spite of them.
I'm proud to be an American. I've BEEN proud to be an American.
