Coda to 3x05 (which means spoilers)
Sam stumbles back into the motel room, the Colt still in his right hand, and heads for the bathroom. He presses his back against the wall next to the doorframe, looks out into the room where Dean is still sleeping. His index finger is trembling against the trigger.
Aren't you tired of dealing with Dean's broken psyche?
He can't stand the idea of Dean waking, of explaining to Dean just how badly he's fucked up. He can't stand another day sitting next Dean in the car, all that agony coiled up tight and quiet beneath Dean's skin. He can't stand the voices that say You knew and did nothing, that say You failed me, that say You made me like this. Jess' voice. Dad's voice. Dean's voice.
Desperate, sloppy, needy Dean.
Sometimes he thinks this is Dean's revenge for leaving: loving Sam more than he will ever deserve, piling on debt after debt that Sam can never repay.
He can't stand the idea of Dean waking up, of seeing this latest failure written across Dean's face with all the others.

Won't you be just a tiny bit relieved?
He's still standing there, holding the Colt, when the sun rises and Dean comes in and carefully unwraps Sam's fingers from the gun. The kindness in Dean's face is terrible to see.
