evolution and religion

most of you know I am a very scientifically minded person, and yet I still hold room in my views for some supernatural activity...
I came across this quote from pope John Paul II while helping my love research a paper she is writing on intelligent design, and whether it should be accepted by the general populace.
most of you also know that I tend to see creationists as kinda crazy, almost as if they are saying it's a sunny day when there is a torrential downpour hapening... they fail to look beyond their indoctrination and reject every bit of documented evidence and scientific reasoning that supports evolution.

the quote is as follows
"In his encyclical Humani Generis, my predecessor Pius XII has already affirmed that there is no conflict between evolution and the doctrine of the faith regarding man and his vocation... Today, more than a half-century after the appearance of that encyclical, some new findings lead us toward the recognition of evolution as more than an hypothesis."
what he refers to the encyclical Humani Generis, is the first papal document to officialy state that evolution is not necessicerily in conflict with the churches teachings.
and given that fairly recently many of the mucky-mucks in the Catholic church declaired taht the bible is not specificly a historical document (includeing the pope, although I cannot find my source for that at the moment), this makes the bible a colection of stories, allegory and metaphore, more in line with teaching morals and attitudes, than as a document that specifically outlines the history of the world.

so if there are any creationists reading this, please pxplain how you continue to view evolution as wrong when the highest authority figure in christinity (the pope) has specifically stated in not unclear terms that evolution is correct, and not in conflict with christian beliefs?

it baffles my mind...
