'Kissing,' says Lolita curiously, like she's tasting the word for the first time. 'What precisely is the point?'

She knows what the point is, of course, but a textbook definition is not the same as understanding. It seems such an important thing to entities of flesh- that, and the associated touching and stroking and so on and so forth that ( Read more... )

The Doctor, oblivious to Lolita's identity, believes she must just be a confused alien, like he was, once!

"It's an expression of affection," he says. "Connecting physically. Generally a human custom."

She's not at all surprised to see that the Doctor is the one answering her question. Indeed, it rather amuses her; he never could turn down a chance to help, if only on the smallest level.

'I'm perfectly aware of that, Doctor, thank you,' she says with crisp good nature. 'It just seems a terribly arbitrary choice, when there are so many other, more truthful methods of expression affection for a person. And it's hardly restricted to humans.'

The Doctor doesn't like it when he's doubled forward on his own timeline so he ends up conversing with someone he has yet to already meet. Still! No reason not to talk!

"True, but if you think about it, very few species out there find the mutual stimulation of mouths and sharing of saliva to be romantic."

Oh, but he has met her! Many times, in fact, he just doesn't quite realise it. Fair deuce, as she's not exactly in the habit of going around wearing a body.

'Many of the humanoid species do,' she says with a shrug. 'And most other species have some physical equivalent.'

The Doctor crosses his arms, considering the woman before him. He also doesn't like it when someone appears to know as much as he does!

"So what's you question, exactly? I think I've ended up away from it."

'Kissing,' she reiterates with a small, entertained quirk of the lips. 'Why is it considered to be romantic? Mutual oral stimulation, as you say; how does that have anything to do with love or affection?' Her brow furrows delicately in thought. 'I suppose it must feel good, but even so. It's entirely illogical.'

He looks at the woman curiously. "Have you never been kissed?"

'No.' It doesn't seem particularly strange to her. 'I don't usually wear a body.'

The Doctor doesn't understand, but he knows some species that don't have bodies.

"Eternal?"

She can't quite help the little grin that flits over her face at his polite confusion.

'TARDIS.'

The Doctor looks confused, then startled.

"How is that possible?"

The tiny little curl of the lips turns into a full-on grin at that, bright and almost girlish. She smooths long fingers down her abdomen, affirming the presence of a physical self both for herself and the Doctor.

'Bloc transfer computations,' she offers as an explanation. 'Imbued with my telepathic presence. Absurdly simple, really. I thought it might be an interesting way to explore the Nexus.'

"Block transfer computations, really? Well, that's one way to reimage yourself. But...what part of the timeline are you from? What era is Gallifrey sitting in?"

Naturally, all the fun conversation goes away in favor of the Doctor panicking over his past/future.

Oh, just like the Doctor. So very, very serious. Lolita shakes her head, brushing off his worry.

'Gallifrey's been gone a while, Doctor. I'm fairly nearly where you are now; no need for concern about timelines.' She pauses, purses her lips in a little frown of bemused thought. 'Not that timelines seem to much matter in this place.'
