Excellent review. Got mine from Alien Entertainment (great store!) the day before BBC America started showing Matt Smith. The reason I mention this is not for bragging rights - but I had been looking for other reviews, and seen a number (http://whona.realtvboard.com/toys-releases-f1/matt-smith-sonic-screwdriver-t2986-100.htm , http://autobotcity.myfastforum.org/ftopic703-0-asc-0.php , http://www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Smith-Eleventh-Doctors-Screwdriver/dp/B003FHXMDC )that mention that the sound stops working after you keep using the secret sounds. Sure enough, this week, the sound failed completely - in less than three weeks :-(. It may be confined to the initial CO run, and seems to occur only after you access the secret sounds, so hopefully those of you who got yours later will not endure this epic (and costly) fail.

is there information on if there was a recall, or if this problem was fixed? I purchased mine through eBay and paid for it on Apr-15-2010 might this mean my sonic is destined to burn out? (sad face)

I wouldn't be so quick to send it back yet. I happened to stumble across the secret sounds by accident, and was really getting into #4 - the short circuit - when mine, I guess, short circuited. I've been searching if there's a fix - in those same links I posted, someone reported that banging the green tip real hard on a wooden surface got their's working again - I tried it to the point I was worried I might actually break it - but no luck - the light and spring action work, but still no sound. I've also read that CO has acknowledged there's a problem, and that vendors (in the UK) are taking them back/exchanging them. (Which sadly probably won't help you, unless you got it from an understanding Ebay store/seller.) Worst case if you're still determined to get rid of it - I am looking for a new one...

Have sold my Sonic. =< but I'm looking forward to a later purchase of this device once the bugs are worked out. Or a metal replica....
