General Philosophical Question About Costuming

i find myself with a dilemma, and i was wondering what y'all thought -

what if you were trying to recreate a costume, but find what you think is probably a mistake in the construction of the original costume...?

would you:

A) correct the mistake, thereby diverge from the original costume you are trying to recreate

or

B) recreate the "mistake" for the sake of authenticity, but violate what you feel is the correct construction of the garment in question?

specifically, i'm drafting a pattern for the Eighth Doctor's TVM waistcoat and have confirmed to my own personal satisfaction that while the right-side body panel was cut true and square, the left-side body panel was cut off-center (compared to the right-side), about 1/2" too high and at an angle to boot...
