Question/rant about dying fabric

Apr 15, 2012 11:54

I was attempting to prepare a dye bath for a project I am working on. Keeping it close to the hip till I am further along. I am using a reactive dye due to the slightly delicate nature of the fabric. I needed 1.5 cups of salt dissolved in warm water to go into the dye bath before adding the fabric, but I could not get the non-iodized salt (from the supermarket)to dissolve to save my life. After I combined 1 cup of warm water with the salt (per instructions) I started stirring, and stirring, and stirring. All the salt would just settle on the bottom.

So I tried heating up the container (and the salt-maybe this was the problem?) to make the water a little warmer and stirred some more. Nothing. Then I set it into my stand mixer and let it go for a while. All the salt just settled back to the bottom. Finally I gave up :(

I am going to try again with kosher salt (also non-iodized) to see if I can get that to dissolve. (before I prepare the dye part as it is in powder form) I wonder if there is something I can pick up at a craft store. If anyone has any ideas, I'd like to hear them.
