My Mad Quest to Make a Perfect Season 16/17 Scarf: Faded Purple Sections

Jan 25, 2014 18:53

One unique feature of the Season 16/17 scarf is at the end of the Duplicate Half. There is a purple panel that has been somehow bleached or faded, appearing yellow in the middle and purple only on the edges.

This can still be seen on the Shada scarf today.

When this variation of the scarf first appeared in “The Ribos Operation”, the panel in question was still unaltered.

However, by the next serial, “The Pirate Planet”, something had happened to the second to last panel on the Duplicate half to produce this effect.

Indeed, beyond that the last section of purple on the very end of the Duplicate half was also partially bleached, though not as badly as the previous one, instead appearing partially brown.

Yet somehow, whatever did this didn’t seem to affect the panels between those two sections.

As for how to replicate it, I’m still investigating different options. On my prototype before I’d finished ironing out the pattern, I tried out variegated yarn that was woven with both yellow and purple.

Unfortunately, rather than being printed yarn that slowly changes color, it had yellow and purple threads twisted together, so the overall effect looks like a heathered pink.

I’m currently trying out hydrogen peroxide bleaching, but not knowing what it’ll do to the wool I’m not going to try it on the scarf until I’ve got a successful test on a swatch. Once I have, I'll get back to this.

Next up are the tassels.
