Title: All in the Spirit of Scientific Inquiry (four parts)
Rating: Um. PG13.
Characters: Tenth Doctor, Jack Harkness, Martha Jones, River Tam, Mal Reynolds
Prompt: 214: Crossover.
A/N: Firefly has eaten my brain. Possibly this caused me to decide that should Jack and River ever meet, the first thing she'd do is kill him. Hence... the following four-parter.
1.
The TARDIS landed, unsteadily, and the Doctor looked out to see where they were. Jack looked over his shoulder.
“Phew, what is that smell?”
“Mud, from the looks of it.” The Doctor stepped out, looking around. “Some kind of work camp I think.”
“Right. And what are we doing here?”
“It was a mistake. I was trying to get to a place called Serenity Valley, there was a big battle there. No idea why we ended up here.”
Martha emerged from the TARDIS as well. “Something really stinks here. Can we find out where we are and then go, please?
2.
In the kitchen of Serenity, River shuddered. Something had arrived… something new.
Or something very old. She stood up from her seat at the table, and hurried down to the cargo bay. As she was about to leave, she saw Kaylee and Mal coming in, and ran past them. She heard Kaylee say “River? What’s wrong?”, but didn’t stop.
River stopped abruptly not far from the ship. Mal and Kaylee, who had followed her, stopped as well. There was a tall, apparently wooden square blue box standing there. Outside were three people who were not mudders or the foreman’s prods.
3.
River stared at the three people, but one in particular. The man with the blue coat and the nice smile. Frowning, she turned, almost colliding with Mal behind her. Swiftly she took his gun and fired it at blue-coat-man, who fell.
Mal took the gun from her, shouting “River, what in t’hell d’you do that for?”
She looked up at him, eyes wide. “I needed to see how it worked.” She pointed over at the man.
The man she’d shot was getting to his feet, helped by the dark-skinned girl next to him. He stared. “Uh… What the hell happened?”
4.
“He wouldn’t lie down. They go away and they lie down and they don’t get up again. Something wrong ‘bout him. Can’t be quantified. I needed to see how it worked.”
Mal sighed. “O’ course you did.” He hurried over to the three people.
“Sorry about that. River gets a little confused sometimes. She didn’t mean no harm.”
The girl looked incredulous. “Confused? She just shot him.”
“An’ he ain’t dead. So no harm done.”
“She still…” The girl was silenced by blue-coat-man. “Martha, it’s okay.” He looked at Mal. “Captain Jack Harkness.”
“Captain Malcolm Reynolds. This is River Tam.”
