A/N: Sometimes art imitates life.
Vala had always been constantly moving. Scenery changed, ships were stolen, deals were made. Some things were constant, but they were few and far between. She got jittery if she stayed in the same place too long and was weary of anyone who wanted to go with her. Well, she was untrusting of everyone, but still. But then something happened that shifted her world. Vala met a guy.
A deal had gone south and he was there, in all his blue eyed glory. And then, like everyone else who had come through her life, he was gone. But unlike the times before, they met up again. She hadn’t left his side voluntarily since. Well, not without the intent of returning. He had changed her life and it didn’t even look like he noticed that much.
No more conning, no more gallivanting across the universe. The former pirate had a home now, a base, that place she always returned to no matter what happened. The same base that Daniel kept. Her world centered around him now. Where he went, she was sure to follow. And where she trotted off to, he ran after her. Even when he thought she was dead.
As much as Vala realized this, Daniel ignored her. Work held his attention and his focus was on saving the galaxy; the universe. While that was a noble goal indeed, she just wanted one thing from him. In the back of her mind, deep down, she cared about the fate of the galaxy. But in the day to day? The universe could burn for all she cared, as long as she could still be with him.
One thing; just one thing was all she wanted in return for helping the good guys. Vala didn’t think it was all that much to ask for. It was after all, just a moment in time she was after.
She just wanted him to look at her. To turn around and really see her. He smiled and looked at her when she spoke, but it wasn’t the same. What she wanted was for him to know that she was there, not for the team, but for him. If he needed someone to talk to or be comforted by, she could be that person. Where he went, she went. They could be a team of their own.
As Vala was contemplating all this in the mess hall, staring into the very nearly empty cup of coffee, a hand reached into her vision. “Need a refill?” That familiar voice brought up thoughts of toothpaste, dusty books and a warm smell that was distinctly Daniel. A wide, welcoming smile met her as she gazed up at him.
“Sure, darling. Thanks,” Vala responded with a surprisingly shy grin. His blue eyes lingered a moment in her stare. A warm tingle spread across her body and her heart sputtered an excited beat. Her lips curved into a full blown smile when she realized, just as he walked away with her coffee mug, what had just happened. What she’d wanted since coming to the base, what she thought about while catching his glance as he walked by in a hallway, it was finally coming true.
He’d seen her.
He was bringing her coffee.
There was a strong chance that they could be their own team, fueled by caffeine.
