Got a few little things to update on. Finished reading Nonviolence: The History of a Dangerous Idea by Mark Kurlansky. Brilliant, especially once it got into more modern history such as World War II and Vietnam. It was also interesting to read about how the American Revolution could have possibly been won through nonviolent means if the Americans had just kept up the boycotts and protests such as the Boston Tea Party. The author made a point that I really latched onto; that war is not in man's nature, but instead in the nature of greed. Cause if you think about it, if man wasn't so greedy, wars wouldn't be a problem. There wouldn't be: "I need this bit of land." or "I need these resources." Someone said, it could have been Ghandi but I'm too lazy to go grab the book to check, that mankind's problems all boil down to a lack of mutual love. That if everyone loved each other and respected each other, there wouldn't be the violent cultures we have now. Definately a good read for anyone interested in how to buck the system and the violent conditioning that people are put through since childhood. Really makes you stop and think about how different one's opinions would be if you didn't grow up with violence as a common occurance.
Next book up is Crome Yellow by Aldous Huxley. Been wanting to read this for a while and now I'm finally in the mindspace to really get through it and enjoy it. There's just really something about his writing that captures my mind. For instance, this bit, where Mr. Scogan is describing a future where love and having children/the family are two seperate things. That love is a free thing and that an "impersonal generation" will come to be through tubes in labs (something that the author explores in Brave New World). And he writes:
"It sounds lovely," said Anne.
"The distant future always does."
Such a little quote, but the idea is very intriguing. How we dream of a future that could possibly never exist and yet we fight so hard for it. Almost makes me wish that people would stop 'protecting our futures' and just enjoy the present.
On a completely different side of things, been in a big knitting mood lately. Made one hat (the one based on Rob Pattinson's black one) and a headband that unfortunately is a bit too small. It still fits but it's kind of uncomfortable. lol. Also have another hat in the works that's a really nice rusty orange, that's just gonna be an ubersimple beanie. Also, if any of you guys are interested and want to learn to knit, I'd be happy to help teach you. I know one flister's interested, but if more than a few of you are I'll just post the intstructions here. Sort of a group thing. So what do you think? You guys wanna do lessons or no?
