Coachella

It's been two weeks since my last day of work and I've been relaxing in vacation mode.
I went to coachella on the saturday after my last day. Coachella was a big two day 'music and arts' festival. Jeff and I went for only the first day, but saw many great bands.

First, we saw a band called Kosheen. This was the first time I'd heard this band. I think they're best described as portishead on prozac and ecstasy. They're a bit like portishead, with a dark trip hop sound and live celloist (bassist?), but the vocals are a lot more 'up'. They don't have the haunting sound of portishead. They also have a lot more of an electronica feel, even having a few out and out drum and bass songs. Overall, they were pretty decent.

Then we blew some time watching Dan the Automator (of Gorillaz fame) DJ, but that quickly got annoying so we walked over to this 'island' of machinery in the middle of the field. The exhibit had a large sign with "Robochrist Industries" printed in flames. On the two sides were large robots that would kick the hydraulic shit juice out of any battlebot. In the center, there was a large cross with jesus hung, with a fetus on his lap. On each side of the cross there were large wooden cutouts of women with horns doing nasty lesbionic type shiznit. They then fired up everything for a dusk show. The women sprang to life moving back and forth with the bum kissin', while fire shot out of their tits and mouth. The cross sprang up so the crowd could see it, and the animated catholic priests touching little boys on the side. Then the robots got their motors ignited and sprang to life, tearing a big stack of shopping carts apart. There was much noise and tossing, tearing, burning and crushing of carts. Although the robots were pretty clutch, the show had no real point, and Siouxsie was taking the stage so we ran over to the main stage to view her performance.

A very large crowd had gathered around the stage and Jeff and I realized the importance of pushing and shoving our way through the tightly packed crowd, 'cuz we knew it'd only get busier. Siouxsie was looking good, and the band sounded great. They played a lot of their old singles and the crowd was loving it. Siouxsie got into her bra/bikini top as I'd seen her do in Creatures shows, and she was looking pretty decent for being in her mid forties. She dissed the promoters and music industry in general quite a bit. I guess they'd gotten fucked over, years ago. When they wound down, there was a huge rush of people toward the stage, because of the next performer.

The next performer was Björk. It took them quite a while to set up for her, as she was accompanied by an orchestra of probably eight as well as two curious guys sitting at computers who make up Matmos, a band which specializes in experimental electronica (The song I'm listening to now uses mostly samples taken from one of the band's members liposuction surgery). Björk's performance was awesome. There's a great description of the show available here. Even though she was visibly pregnant, she put on a great show, and the audience was really fired up. I was even lucky enough to be right in front of a very mexican guy, who sang his accent augmented renditions of Bj
