Summary Miranda makes an unexpected request.
Author's Note
Accompanying Wallpaper Andy awoke the next morning and jumped, startled to have slept through the night. She looked across the room and saw Miranda sleeping in the chair. She had only a moment to think about how innocent and childlike Miranda looked before spring into action.
"Miranda," Andy put a hand on her shoulder and shook gently, "it's morning."
"What?" Miranda roared, propelling herself out of the chair and making a mad dash for the stairs.
Andy wanted to laugh at the fleeing Miranda. Then she looked down at the bottom step and saw a pile of 52 comics. Andy picked them up and put them in her bag with a smile.
The girls came down the stairs in their uniforms and looking confused.
"I've never seen mom move that fast!" Caroline snickered and Cassidy smiled in return.
"Still here?" Cassidy asked Andy.
"I fell asleep reading last night. So did your mom." Andy motioned to the path that Miranda had taken to flee.
"Is she going to be ready soon or should we go?"
"No, no, I'm ready." Miranda said, descending the stairs and putting in an earring.
Not only did Miranda make it look effortless, but apparently, for her, it was. And Andy wished she had timed how long it had taken Miranda to change her outfit, feeling sure that it was a record.
Cassidy and Caroline picked up their backpacks.
"Whoa, whoa, whoa." Miranda stared at the girls, "wait."
They turned around, guiltily trying to look confused. Andy looked at Miranda, wondering what was wrong.
"Why are you picking up the wrong backpacks?" Miranda looked between them suspiciously.
"What are you talking about?"
Miranda folded her arms across her chest with exasperation, "why are you pretending to be each other?"
Caroline sighed heavily, "how did you know?"
"Mothers know. Now tell me why."
"For fun." "A test." They said simultaneously and then turned to stare at each other incredulously.
Miranda glared at them, "you're taking each other's tests?"
"I didn't read A Tale of Two Cities." Caroline objected.
"And I didn't do the biology reading. We figured if we split them up and learned one really well it wouldn't be a big deal and we'd both get As."
"That is absolutely a big deal. You two need to do your own work and be accountable for your own grades." Miranda said sternly. "How do you expect to get anywhere in your lives if you cut corners and do half a job?"
The twins stood there and looked duly scorned.
"If the two of you were working for me and I asked you to do a job and you split it up like that I would fire you, if you were expected to split it you would have been assigned to split it. If I ever catch wind of something like this again you two will be in more trouble than you can even imagine. Am I understood?"
"Yes..." They frowned and nodded, scuffing their shoes against the carpet.
"Get in the car, I'll be out in a moment, I want a word with Andrea." Miranda dismissed her children and they silently obeyed.
Andy looked up at Miranda, expecting to receive a lecture about letting her sleep in. The door clicked shut behind the girls, making Andy glance away from Miranda.
Miranda cupped Andy's cheeks and kissed her.
Before Andy could respond Miranda had pulled away again and put on her sunglasses. "Call the girls' school and let them know to make sure that they are the correct twin." Miranda opened the door and left with Andy at her heels.
At noon Andy was working through her lunch break when her phone rang. She picked it up and put it to her ear, using her shoulder to stabilize it. "Sachs."
"Yo Sachs," Lily laughed on the other end. "Where have you been? Let's get out tonight."
"I can't. I have to work."
"What are you talking about? You get out of work at 6."
"I have two jobs now..." Andy had been dreading telling her best friends.
"What? Andy, you're a masochist, what is wrong with you? Are you having money problems?" Lily went on, "Andy, you should have told me."
"I'm not having money problems... it has to do with the woman I was telling you about..."
"Meryl? Why would she want you to work two jobs? This isn't some creepy Stockholm Syndrome-y thing where you're seeking out women like Miranda Priestly?"
"No! I'm not seeking out women like Miranda."
"Oh, she's just Miranda, is she?"
"Shut-up. She was always Miranda."
"When do you not work then?" Lily sounded annoyed.
"Um, I don't know. Can I get back to you?"
Lily sighed, "I have an opening on Friday night. At 7. If you can fit me into your schedule, I'd like you to be there."
"Lily-" Andy started, but she had already hung up.
Friday rolled around and Andy went to work at the Observer, like every morning, and left at 3:30. She knew, come hell or high water, she was going to go to Lily's show. She figured she'd just have to take the girls with her.
Andy and the twins arrived at the townhouse at about the same time. Caroline hmphed a bit and went into the house in front of Andy.
Andy smiled at Cassidy, "I've been reading 52, thank you for helping me catch up."
Cassidy smiled broadly, "yeah, it's a great series. And I'm super psyched for the new Batman movie. I think Brady's going to take me to see it, his sister works in a movie theater."
Andy smiled. "That sounds exciting, would that be your first official date?"
Cassidy nodded, smiling shyly.
Andy smiled supportively, "let's go inside and have a snack." Andy and the twin entered the house and Cassidy threw her backpack onto the floor in the living room next to Caroline's.
"How about a snack and a study party?" Andy grinned.
"Study party?" Caroline raised an eyebrow, "we're not 5."
Andy had expected resistance. "One of my friends is having an art opening tonight and I would really like to take you two to it. And then afterwards we can do anything you want."
"Okay." Caroline said almost instantly.
Cassidy and Andy were both confused by Caroline's easy compliance. But Andy decided not to take it for granted, "awesome. So I'm going to go get some snacks for us."

"Miranda, I would love to meet your girls." Francesca nuzzled the nape of Miranda's neck.
Miranda looked down at Francesca's hands, her arms wrapped around her body and Francesca's warm chest pressed tightly against Miranda's back. Miranda entwined her fingers with Francesca's. Looking at Francesca's dark olive, mediterranean skin against her own creamy British skin Miranda thought of all their similarities and differences. And how improbable it actually was for them to have ended up speaking, let alone the astronomical odds against finding themselves in bed together.
Miranda's heart was reluctant to let Francesca in. On the one hand, Francesca made her happier than she ever remembered Lucas making her. Being with Francesca made Miranda feel more alive than she'd felt in years.
Originally she'd had the twins to feel more alive, too bad she didn't know that all she needed was to have an affair with a woman to feel alive. It could have saved her nine months of being disallowed coffee, 12 hours of excruciating labor and 3 months of rigorous personal training to get her figure back.
But no, she thought, her only regret was not feeling like she wanted to spend time with them. She looked at them and all she saw were two little wiggly aliens that made her life complicated. She had love in her heart for them, but it was hard for her to reach and she wondered if it would ever surface.
When she was with Francesca it made her realize that she'd never truly experienced love. And she honestly wasn't sure she was ready to or if it was even something that she wanted. Being married was hard enough, but she didn't really put Lucas's needs above her own, nor did she have any desire to.
All she wanted to do was make Francesca happy. All she wanted to do was get her work done as soon as possible and steal Francesca away to someplace quiet and sweet. Today, her bedroom would have to do. The sitting room had been one thing, but here in her bedroom her feelings for Francesca felt somewhat tainted by the thought of Lucas.
"Miranda?" Francesca whispered again and kissed her ear.
Miranda shut her eyes tight and sighed as a shiver ran through her body.
"Francesca... I love you..." Miranda said, starting to choke up.
"Miranda are you crying?" Francesca's face was soft and concerned and she gently pushed Miranda onto her back so she could see her face.
Miranda's eyes were shut, her lip quivered and she turned away from the Italian model, trying hard to gain access to Miranda's emotion. Miranda knew if she opened her eyes she would actually be opening much more.
"Miranda, won't you look at me?"
After a few moments of resistence, she opened her eyes to Francesca, knowing she was powerless against the doe-eyed model.
"I love you, too." Francesca smiled adoringly.
Oh dear God, what have I gotten myself into? What have I done?

At 6:27 Andy was preparing to leave with the girls. She'd brought a dress with her and was cursing the fact that she seemed to have lost the match to her earring when the front door opened.
"Miranda!" Andy looked up from her bag in surprise.
"I just thought it might be nice to spend a night with you and the girls." Miranda put her coat and purse in the closet and smiled. "Is that what you wore to work today? A bit formal, isn't it?" Though, she approved of the Prada selection.
"I was just going to take the girls to one of my friends' art openings-"
"That sounds lovely, I would love to go to an art opening." Miranda smiled, "what earrings are you wearing? Because I have a set that would be ravishing with that dress."
Ravishing. Miranda had to say ravish, of course, and it sent a surge of arousal through Andy's body. She scarcely had time to let out a shaky breath before the twins, dressed to the nines, came scampering down the stairs.
"Mom!" They both screamed and jumped at Miranda.
"Hello babies," she kissed each of their foreheads. "I'll be joining you for an evening art, so I hear. And then perhaps a little French cuisine."
"Chez Coquelicot?" Cassidy exclaimed excitedly.
"It is certainly a possibility." Miranda stroked Cassidy's flame red hair. "I have to go change, give Roy a call, he can't be further than two blocks away."
Miranda disappeared up the stairs, her red-headed twins beaming from ear to ear and Andy standing there looking stunned. I guess tonight was going to be the night Lily and Doug found out that she was sleeping with Miranda. Tonight was not going to be as good of a night as she'd hoped.
