Can you hear the whispers in the wind?
No, because they are all in my head
And we were never able to read each other’s minds.
You know, I thought I “got” you in a way few other people could
And that was why you reached out to me:
Despite all our differences you saw something in me that you needed.
You can get snarky and dark and irritable and you are not affectionate and romantic
But you called me a “gentle spirit” and when I smiled you had to smile back
Sometimes
And sometimes I left you flustered and speechless.
I don’t understand

What it was that you saw in me?
I am not like you.
A kind word from you could bring tears to my eyes,
I felt like a popsicle left out in the sun, melted, turned into a sugary goo…
But I never told you this.
I don’t think you ever understood that it was you who brought colors to my life.
There were times when I wanted to take your hand
But I guess a hug would have been appalling and unbearable?
I have too many questions.
You will always see Beauty first, and see deeper than anyone else.
You will always be strong beneath your weakness; no one will ever break you.
You know I could have loved you forever
But it seems like my love was not what you needed
And maybe I hurt you too in ways you’ll never speak of.
You are far away now
And you will never know how much you scarred me
But I forgive you.
I hold my breath not to drown in my old bitterness and I know that I have hope:
I hope that you remember me fondly sometimes
And that you miss something about me, something about the time we spent together,
And I hope that you don’t feel burdened by any of it.
