That the book "The Devil Wears Prada" written by Lauren Weisberger is based on her experiences as an assistant to Anna Wintour, Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, can't be disputed.
But what about the movie? Producer Wendy Finerman said in an interview that the movie Miranda Priestly is based on a combination of editors. And some people have rolled their eyes. But what if it's true? Last night, watching Project Runway Season 9, Episode 4: "All About Nina," I had a revelation.
I think the movie Miranda Priestly is also based on Joanna Coles, Editor-in-Chief of Marie Claire, and Nina Garcia, Fashion Director of Marie Claire. Joanne's exaggereated statements ("If you wore the dress by Cecila, I would have you committed.") and how Nina interrupts people's statements and says "No." (see Nina in the workroom.)
Joanne and Nina also have the Miranda-Nigel dynamic. Nina has lots of her own opinions but when next to her boss she defers. You can see this dynamic more clearly in Project Runway Season 7, Episode 5: "Run for Cover" where the designers were asked to design an outfit for the cover of Marie Claire.
Anyone else watch Project Runway? What do you think of my theory?
