I'll give you a topic: Andy's mom -- who is she? Discuss.

Hi there! I'd like to discuss and understand the process for creating characterization of a character who is mentioned, but has no actual appearance in the film: Andy's mom, Mrs. Sachs.

Whether a writer or a reader, how do you picture her? How much of your take on who Andy's mom is comes from the DWP book, fanon, or your own imagination? I admit to not having read the book much beyond the dropping of a cigarette in the car which happens within the first couple of pages. The film's not much help since the only mention of her IIRCis that she told Richard Sachs that Andy could use some extra money for the rent. That means my own picture (nebulous as it is) of Andy's mom comes from my imagination and the influence of fic I've read.

Admittedly, I'm not even sure that she goes by Mrs. Sachs. Since in my mind, she is presumably a child of the late 50s/early 60s, she grew up with the women's liberation movement in full swing and may well have kept her maiden name when she got married. Andy's mom may indeed go by Ms. Peacock or Ms. DeSimone, for all I know. Okay, those were two really hot teachers I had in school years ago.

So here are some characteristics to consider. What's your take?

  • Age, education, occupation, political leanings, relationship with Andy's dad, geographical origins?

  • What kind of response does she have to Andy's being in a f/f* relationship? Is she accepting, neutral or rejecting? Why?

  • What kind of response does she have to that relationship when Andy's partner is Miranda Priestly? Is she accepting, neutral or rejecting? Why?

  • What sort of attitude does she have toward Miranda if she meets or talks to Miranda prior to learning that Andy is involved with her? Note that this includes situations that might occur before Andy and Miranda become involved.

I look forward to seeing what take others have on the "Magical Morphing Mrs.-Andy's-MomTM". Is she like buttah?

* Note that I'm using "female/female relationship" here to acknowledge that Andy and/or her partner may not consider themselves to be lesbian but rather bisexual, or otherwise labeled. If they are accepting of labels at all. :-)

edited to add reference to film.
