Summary: For the first time in her life Miranda goes to Russian Fashion Week and takes Andy with her.
Disclaimer: I don't own all these characters.
Miranda attended only New York, Paris and Milan Fashion Weeks. All others she ignored. But this time she surprised everyone with her decision. She received invitation letters from London, Tokyo, Sidney, altogether from around the world. But she chose Moscow. Russian designers were something far to her, though many people knew that it was Russia that inspired many designers of the 20th century: the Diagilev ballet, Anna Pavlova, Vera Kholodnaya. Testino sometimes visited Moscow and he told Miranda many things about it.
“There are awesome night clubs and beautiful girls”, he spoke full of beans.
“You know, Mario, I’m not interested either in the first thing or in the second one”, Miranda shook her head.
“Anyway you should go there. It’s nothing to you. I swear you’ll like it”.
The news about Miranda going to Moscow was soon carried round the office bringing all the editors in panic. They could make Miranda ready for Paris for two minutes, but they didn’t know what she will need in Russia.
“Please. Don’t panic”, Nigel told them, “she’s going to Moscow, but not to Siberia. It’s almost France, just a little bit colder”.
“Give me coat and bag”, Miranda commanded to Emily who jumped from her place in an instant and ran up to the closet.
Miranda turned around and looked at her second assistant. Andy was looking something under the table. The editor came up to her table and was standing there until the girl noticed her and straightened up. Andy looked at Miranda with a fearful glance.
“What are you doing, Andrea?” Miranda asked looking closely at her assistant.
“I… um… I’ve lost my earring. But now it’s all right, I found it”, Andy tried to force a smile.
“I see. Boring work. There’s nothing to do, but to search for earrings. I can amuse you”.
Andy looked at Miranda in surprise. Miranda sighed.
“You go to Moscow with me. Tell Nigel to select some clothes for you. That’s all”, with that Miranda took her coat and bag from Emily’s hands and left the office.
Andy shifted her gaze at Emily.
“Well, good luck”, Emily said returning to her table, “apparently you are a good companion for voyages”.
“Emily, are you mad?”
“No, I’m not. I’ve worked here for ages, but I have been nowhere as opposed to you. As for the rest everything is just great”.
“Oh, I’m so sorry, Emily, but you’ve heard everything yourself”.
“What’s that got to do with you?” she sighed. “You as all of us take her dictation.”
Andy found Nigel at the fashion department.
“Hey, Andy”, he said, “extra request for clothes for Moscow? Well, actually, I have some ideas.”
“Where did you learn from that I’m going?” she was surprised.
“Oh, I swallowed it whole that Miranda will take you. Who else, if not you? All right, now I have to finish with Miranda’s jackets and I’ll find something for you”.
By the end of the day Andy was flaked out. Half of the day she and Nigel spent in the closet choosing and rejecting skirts, pants, jackets, cocktail dresses, scarves, boots and shoes. The other part of the day the girl spend at the beauty department listening to a boring lecture about the best colour of lipstick being used at breakfast, lunch and dinnertime and the better make-up during the snowfall.
“What’s the matter with you? Tired?” Nigel asked when they finished.
“That too”, Andy sighed, “Nigel, tell me, why I am going with Miranda again being still her second assistant?”
“Perhaps because she likes you”, Nigel shrugged his shoulders.
“So why doesn’t she make me her first assistant?”
“And what will she do with Emily? She can’t demote her, can she?”
“Of course she can’t. Even if she does that, Emily would never forgive me. I’ve worked here more than a year. It’s high time to think about promotion.”
Nigel looked at Andy agrin.
“The work at 'Runway' seems to have changed you, baby. And you don’t want to become a journalist anymore, do you? Yes, Miranda Priestly can change people. Don’t worry, sweetheart. When the time comes, she’ll give you what you deserve”, and he smiled.
“I don’t believe this. Or do you still hope that Miranda remembers how she played with you in Paris and reclaims her fault?"
“I do”, Nigel became serious, “and if you don’t hope why are you still working here?”
Andy didn’t know the answer. Maybe because she's never thought about it. For almost two years she has worked there she got over everything, so she felt her office was her home. Well she forgot the true meaning of the word “home”, because home was for her the place where she came only to sleep. And she didn’t want to leave for home.
After trip to Paris Miranda began to treat Andy in a completely different way. She rarely asked for something impossible like that Harry Potter book, and even if she asked, she did it not in that horrifying manner as she used to do. And when Andy carried out her wish, Miranda nodded as an expression of her gratitude. And if she was in a good mood, Andy could hear even 'thank you from her. Far and by, Andy got accustomed to her brass, to colleagues, maybe that was the reason why she was still working at 'Runway'. But working here she expected something: maybe a promotion, maybe useful contacts to leave for another place, and she was still here. Nigel was right. They all lived in hope.
Andy has never been to Russia and she wanted to see Moscow though she understood she barely will be able to walk around it, because she’ll be very busy with work. And she was so excited about the coming trip, that she couldn’t fall asleep at night before it very long.
At 6 am Roy picked up Andy, and they drove to Miranda’s townhouse.
When the editor went downstairs, the driver took her suitcase, opened the door for her, and Miranda got in the car.
“Good morning, Miranda”, Andy said with a smile.
“Hello”, Miranda replied drily.
Roy began to move.
“Do you want to check your schedule?” Andy asked.
“Not now. There will be enough time while flight.”
“Okay”.
Several minutes passed in total silence.
“You know”, Andy said to fill the silence, “I’ve never been to Russia, but my friend Lily studied Russian literature and told me much about this country. And when she learned that I’m going there with you, she just died of envy…”
Miranda turned her head to her assistant and gave her a look as if Andy has just told a stupid joke. Her face expressed unwillingness to listen to anything: neither the schedule, nor wonderful stories from her assistants’ lives. And everyone could understand her, only few people would like to listen to such crap at 6 am.
“Roy, please, turn on the radio”, Miranda said. “You know, Andrea”, she said to the girl, “Moscow is an interesting city. There are many places to visit. So I hope you won’t spend all you free time at bars and night clubs,” and she looked at Andy who was totally confused. What? Miranda was speaking about some free time? Probably she decided to make a joke in such manner. Andy couldn’t remember a lot of free time in Paris for sightseeing.
“Okay, Miranda”, Andy replied without understanding what her boss has just said.
Is Miranda really going to Russia to rest from work? By this thought Andy smiled. It means she will be able to have a rest too. To get enough sleep, for instance, while Miranda will be visiting old churches and museums. Andy definitely began to love this trip.
In the evening the jet landed at the airport “Sheremetevo”. The team of American “Runway” was met by two cars of the hotel “Ritz-Carlton”. As soon as Miranda got in the car, she took out the cell from her purse.
“Hello? Cassidy, darling, I have arrived”, Miranda said, “everything’s all right, don’t worry. I’ll call tomorrow. Give love to your sister”, Miranda hung up.
At the next moment another phone call followed.
“Hello?” Miranda answered. “Karina”, her face broadened out into a smile, “yes, everything’s fine. We were met at the airport and now we are going to the hotel. What? Tomorrow in the evening? Of course, I will. I’m not sure I’ll be able to stay there for a long time, but still I won’t miss that”.
Having finished her conversation Miranda leaned back and closed her eyes. Several seconds passed. Andy was sitting and looking out of the window.
“Andrea”, she heard Miranda’s voice. Andy shuddered, she thought Miranda had fallen asleep. “When we arrive at the hotel, please, do not disturb me. I will be waiting for you tomorrow morning to check the schedule. That’s all.”
