It's been a few weeks... I guess I could update again.
Went out to Tuesday night and suited up for hardsuiting. I realized that 3 months off, an unfamiliar shield, a lefty fighter, and a pulled elbow really aren't conducive to solid fighting. On the upside, Craven gave me some great tips that have really got me thinking. I did want to play more heavy but my elbow just wasn't having it. So I went and did some Cut & Thrust instead. I'm really getting a feel for what I like and dislike about my current kit and have ideas for the next upgrade. Also, I REALLY need to get my shield mounted on a boss.
I'm also dancing with another sinus thing, though still in denial about being sick. Made for some entertaining dreams about cliche werewolf/vampire/zombie hunters using the SCA as a recruiting ground for sword training.
I'm almost done with Artimese's Genestealers. I really just need one or two more sessions with them. I'm hoping to make that happen soon. Then I have a conversion project, the Terminators, and maybe some personal items to work on.
I've also been doing a good bit with my 40k blog. It's getting decent hits and response... People seem to enjoy the articles.
There hasn't been any work on the above for a few days... I've been distracted from the above by Blood Bowl for the 360. I had considered getting it for PC months ago, but waited so that I could share it and play it with friends easier. I'm unsure if this was worth it... going and playing it at
posadnik ivan's made me realize just how crappy it looks on my old TV. I've kinda been holding out to save up for a nice large screen again, but now I think I'd be happy with something a little more moderately sized (and priced) as long as it has a nice hi-def picture.
As to the game? The user interface is a little clunky and annoying. For example, the background "crowd" noise gets obnoxious. But in the sound control panel, it isn't a separate effect. It is considered a generic "sound effect" and is directly related to the sounds of the actions on the pitch. Even worse? There's no way during a game to modify the sounds, you have to exit out to the main menu. Many of the menus have extra steps, sub-menus that should loop but instead throw you into a different endpoint, and other odd layouts that just don't jive. It's not a problem once you get used to them and figure out what is and isn't important, but the interface certainly isn't intuitive.
On the upside, the gameplay is actually quite good. It's neat that the "Classic" mode gameplay is directly taken from the 5th edition Living Rulebook. Once you get the basic idea of the controls, it flows pretty smoothly. I could give away my board and minis and not feel any real loss. It plays quite well against another human. As to the AI? It is pretty decent for setting up a defense and does vary play based upon race... but it takes weird risks. Things like trying to dodge when staying still would be fine, risking an extra move when it doesn't matter, or not risking the extra move when time is short. I'm sure I'll probably play through the campaign mode eventually, but I much prefer play versus friends.
In other news, I've been asked to speak as a member of the DWS for Blossom... that just makes my month. Of course, now I have to think of something nice to say about her. (Not too hard, that... but I know I have to think on how to do so without offending others in the process.)
Life otherwise is groovy. Everyone's hale, hearty and happy. Had a nice tax return, even if it did go out just as quickly as it came in. My post-Estrella reports and all are done and in. Things have kinda hit that calm after the storm and most of the cleanup is done. Just some dishes, floors, and a closet disaster to take care of. There's things coming up on the horizon, but they're all small bumps and don't need a lot of prep or planning. So yeah, life is good.
