Happiness Day 1...albeit bittersweet

Dec 08, 2008 08:43

It's a Monday out here, I have the blasted colds, and my head's throbbing like crazy (again) but I have to make a post.

I'm not the biggest fan of Manny "The PacMan" Pacquiao, but as a fighter, he does throw the best punches. I just wish the people around him don't encourage arrogance. Other than that, once again, he made the Philippines proud, making Golden Boy Oscar dela Hoya concede to him at the beginning of Round 9.

He's now officially the Number 1 Pound-for-Pound Fighter in the World. And his fourth (?) baby will be born anytime this week? I'm happy for him. Maybe that child was his lucky charm, but from what I've seen of the news bits featuring the fight, he totally owned it..

I was in a daze, yesterday, half-drugged and half-asleep when I heard the telly say something about the death of Marky Cielo.

I sobered instantly.

To not get into a long story, there's a Reality Show-Talent Search in my country called STARSTRUCK. In the 4th batch, Marky Cielo joined. He's 18 years old, can act, can dance up a storm, and is very very proud of his roots.

He is an Igorot. LIKE ME. A highlander. MINORITY. A people rooted in our traditions that we get flak for it. But mostly I attribute it to the fact that, unlike other parts of the Philippines, we were NEVER ULLY conquered by either the Spanish, or the Japanese, and the Americans chose our region to make their abode when they were here. That's what enabled us to stay true to our ancestral roots.

In Manila, where showbusiness is dominated by mestizas and celebs with Caucasian features, he had no qualms declaring his ancestry. From that moment on, he earned my respect.

He won the title of SOLE SURVIVOR. I wrote about his victory here.

I kinda followed his fledgling career. I watched his shows on TV, checked out his dance numbers on variety shows, like a protective older sister. That was also the time I was active (sorta) on YouTube. And the videos I uploaded were about him.

But now he's dead, found dead in his room by his mom. In his sleep.

He is 20 years old.

And he hasn't danced his swan song just yet.

In several days his remains will be brought home to the highlands, where our ancestors would welcome him in their bosom.

May he rest in peace.

MA-AN!!!! HERE IT IS!!!!!

So, several days ago, bittersweet_bun told me about a rumored TV Asahi drama with Ohno. YESSSS!!!! I could hardly contain myself, but it was just a rumor, and I have a tendency to jinx things so....

I opened my email and got an email from En-sensei.....(here is THAT happy post, en-sensei!!!! Complete with the dance! Oh if you could see me now!!!)

Apparently it's a comedy. A link to a pic here, can't post as it ain't mine.. Apparently, it's a comedy. PURRRFECT!!!!!

EDIT// En-sensei's superquick gist of the article:

Uta no Oniisan.
Gist of Nikkan article - Asahi TV, series drama, to start on 1/16, friday nights 11:15.

Maou was his where he got the limelight for the first time in the drama world, he was a lawyer there and it was a difficult role, Nishizuka (? i'm making a guess at the kanji, 西琢, never saw that combination before) producer chose him because his acting was awesome in Maou where he had very little lines and had to act out subtly different expressions, he's expecting that he'll be able to show more of his skill this time, story is about how a guy ends up becoming the uta no oniisan (literally, "song brother," dude who leads kids' songs/exercise dances on educational TV) by chance and is a comedy piece about what he goes through and how he matures, on top of the acting,

Ohno's personality was also a reason for him being chosen, "a unique pokerface with little ups and downs in terms of showing emotions, being called "ojisan" by the Arashi members at times, he's known as a mild and good-natured guy," he's said "I don't like kids that much" and doesn't have the hyper image usual uta no oniisans have.

Kawanishi producer thought that would be perfect - him on the job not really wanting to be, he's taken pictures shots (for posters? idk), he smiles shyly and said "This costume is really flashy... I feel like I've become a Johnny's Jr. again".

"It's a comedy and totally different from last time's "Maou," so I'm looking forward to see how I'll act it. I hope to be able to give courage to people who see the main character doing his best."

end of gist. Thanks En-sensei!

So....first Hiro's drama. Then Toma!! And Eita. And MatsuKen!!!! AND NOW OHNO!!!!!!!!! 2009, I LOVE YOU!!!

I knew, after his stellar turn in Maou, that he'd be really really gonna grow big as an actor....and in the hardest medium of all: COMEDY. He''d be great. He'd be awesome!

I'll take this opportunity to make this my happy post for today. Happiness Day 1, THAT meme.

I'm happy that....
... Manny made us proud (and that his wife Jinkee did not go into labor from seeing her husband punch dela Hoya to a pulp. I exaggerated.)
... a lovely young man has gone home to his Maker after living a short, but sweet and hopefully full life.
... Japan TV loves me to pieces....
... I will see Ohno again in a drama!!!!!!!! YES!!!
... I got back my voice, after losing it for a day. (yeah. my usual bout of colds....)
