LA weather is so boring! Every single day: sunny, high in the 70s, low in the 60s. The only clouds I ever see are from smog and the marine layer. BORING!! Then again, I'm not really in the mood to go through a Category 4 hurricane, so I think I can cope with the boredom. Has everyone back in AL and MS gone out and bought their milk and bread yet btw?
Highlights:
*Actually started testing the circuit board this week. The procedure isn't too difficult unless you're using a ground on the probe, so I don't use the ground. Working with really expensive testing equipment (touchscreen high speed oscilloscope) is quite fun though.
*Visited JPL and Caltech on Friday. As far as NASA visitor centers go, JPL's was the worst. It was one room with some probe models in it. We also got to watch videos of scientists cheering (nerdgasms) and the same computer animation of the Mars rover landing about six times. Got to see Mission Control, see some deer run around, and meet an astronaut too, which was all cool. The overall tour didn't show us a whole lot though. No testing towers or wind tunnels or full size rockets. I got a JPL hat from the giftshop though. Caltech was, well, quirky. After sitting through an admissions presentation where we got our $60 application fee waived, we took a tour of the campus and learned about the crazy houses, the honor code, and a sampling of the pranks Caltech students have pulled off, and some MIT dissing of course. Verdict: I'm not entirely sure. I'll probably apply, but I'm not sure if the CA free spirit/math/science craziness is the best fit for me.
*LA City Tour/Getty Museum: LA isn't the prettiest city in the world. We first went to Alvara St, which had a big Mexican open air market thing with plenty of sombreros, maracas, Mexican food and drink, and Spanish language joke t-shirts (I'm with Pendejo. ->). Next we drove through Chinatown (on your left is a Chinese restaurant and shop and on your right is another Chinese restaurant and shop) and Downtown (it's a bit scary). Then we went on down to Hollywood and couldn't find parking there, so we drove down Hollywood Blvd to see the Chinese Theater, Walk of Fame, and a noticable number of adult entertainment stores and ate lunch at a Wendy's on Sunset. Following that we stopped-and-goed through Beverly Hills and headed on the Getty Museum. That place was gorgeous and free except for $7 parking. I got to see some Rembrandt religious paintings, and other various paintings and such, including Van Gough, Monet, Manet, Gainesbourough, and others. We only spent 2 hours there, so I missed a couple wings of the museum, but still had a good time.
*Anyone else get AP Scores yet?
