The Golden Hinde II: Interior

Another picspam...

First we went down into the fo'c'sle, which was apparently a work station for craftsmen when it wasn't being used to fire cannons.

More cannons.  We go down into the gun deck.

The "ship's rules" weren't kidding.  This deck has a really low ceiling, and I did bang my head.  I can only imagine trying to fight under these circumstances.

The hold, full of the requisite prop chests and barrels.

Another view of the hold.  Now here's something I never realized: Drake was quite safety-conscious.  There are enormous fire-extinguishers all over the ship.

Something we never saw in the movie: the Master Barber Surgeon's cabin.  I don't want to think about it too much.

The Captain's quarters.  Apparently, Drake was the only officer to get his own bed.  Somehow, it hardly looks as luxurious as I pictured.  Didn't Drake bring his own fancy furniture?

Ah, here's an example.  The Hilton it ain't.

Apparently, the officers and gentlemen slept on straw mats in the armory, which had a spiffy decor of nasty-looking harpoons.

The "great cabin" was used as an eating, meeting and socializing room for the officers and gentlemen.  The view here is looking back into the armory.  And there's yet another fire-extinguisher, perhaps in case of a stray cannonball.

There was a definite pecking order.  Second-rate gentlemen had to sit on these puny benches.

First-rate gentlemen got cushions.  I'm sure you recognize this space...

Here's a close-up of the windows.  As my husband commented, "It must've been hellish to film here."  Of course, the glare probably protected the eyes from the vision of what lay directly outside: the gallery, where the ship's gentlemen relieved the call of nature.  Of course, this puts the idea that women are bad luck on a ship in entirely new perspective.  I suppose if a lady needed to use the gallery, all the gentlemen had to cross their legs while they waited for her to straighten her petticoats...

And surely you recognize this area...John Thaw was in the big chair, and Paul Darrow was on the far end of the bench, near the rounded window.  There was actually a musician crammed into the corner.

Here's Rob, sitting in Drake's chair.  And while taking the photo, I was sitting in the seat that was occupied by Paul Darrow!
