I met this dog and his owner tonight...
a sign propped up asking for money, constructive criticism, all the usual requests to get spare change...
normally people on the street i see are crazy and totally out of their skull with insanity or drug use or a combo of the both and i really don't bother trying to talk to or do more than avoid eye contact..
tonight was different, maybe it was the dog's fault or because he was there.. i dunno.. makes no diff to me..
and i know that, but this young lady, in her 20's, maybe 20-22 is obviously not insane, or at least no more than i am, and is on something, but no more than am with prescription meds, so who the hell am i to judge?
she is obviously taking better care of a dog than i have seen in well to do households that really should know better. this is a dog who also obviously loves her and woe betide anyone who tries anything at all. he gave me the space to give him a cookie, but moving towards him was awarded growls and the look of "don't try that again... "
i wish both of them the best of luck and had the spare room, the knowledge she would not run off for whatever needs she has, i would be happy to offer one to keep someone from going mad and a dog from getting sick on the street. but reality being what it is, i'll almost certainly see them on the street again, looking ever so slightly madder and desperate.
i know some people are going to say " you shouldn't pander to these people on the street, you should just make them get help" or "all they are going to do is get their drugs and alcohol"...
i guess all i can say is before just assuming the worst about people, maybe talking is a good thing.. you might be surprised..
