Part Deux of the Brie Cheese's fabulous play

Act 1, Scene 3

Fritz’s. The girls are working when Trey Parker, a greaser in a leather jacket comes in. He puts his arm around Cassandra and tries to kiss her, but she says “im busy” and rolls out of his arm. Trey just combs his hair and sits at the counter. He starts talking to an old man sitting next to him, but it is obviously geared at Cassandra. Cassandra obviously tries to ignore him, until he makes a comment about her being easy. Cassandra turns, throws a milkshake in his face, and orders him out. He refuses to leave, and orders a cheeseburger from Burl, and then trys to kiss Cassandra, more forcefully this time. She pushes him away, but he will not leave. Lucas Rivers walks in, sees the scene, and punches Trey out after Trey slaps Cassandra. Cassandra is on the ground, holding her face. Lucas walks over to her and helps her up. It is love. Jimmy enters in time to see the look on Cassandra’s face when she sees Lucas. He is holding flowers, and quickly turns to leave.

Act 1, Scene 3. The café, at a busy point. There are many people in the restaurant.

Cassandra: (pulling the phone away from her mouth, covering the speaker) Hey Roxy, can you get table 5 for me? I’m on the phone. (continues talking on the phone)

Roxanne: (She is making a frappe, humming a jazzy tune and shaking her groove thang.) Hmmm? Oh um, sure. (She twirls away from the frappe machine and sets it down in front of a customer).

Customer: Hey, this isn’t what I ordered!

(Roxanne doesn’t hear him and continues humming and dancing).

(Trey enters. He is wearing a leather jacket with greased back hair and tight jeans.)

Trey: (coming up to Cassandra, still on the phone and puts his arm around her). Hey sweet lips. (He leans in to kiss her).

Cassandra: (Rolling out of his arm, still on the phone) I’m busy, Trey.

(Trey takes the hand that was around Cassandra and immediately combs his hair to maintain cool. He sits at the counter next to an old man with coffee).

Trey: Typical of babes these days, one second they’re liftin their skirts up, the second people can see you, they’re church girls. Actin’ like a damn catholic nun.

(Cassandra ignores him and brings a couple of burgers over to a table and skates back over to the frappe machine).

Trey (cont):What’s with em? I try and show them a little love, they throw it in my face.

(Cassandra continues making frappes).

Trey: Never thought this one would be that way, seein as she comes beggin for more every night in the back of my Chevy.

(Cassandra turns around, has obviously had enough. She takes the frappe and throws it in his face).

Cassandra: How’s that for throwing it in your face? Get out of here, you overgreased perverted jerk!

Roxanne: (Throwing a rag on his face) Wipe your face, greasemonkey.

Trey: You think im gonna take that from a chick? (Other customers begin to edge out of the café). Berl, get me a goddamn cheeseburger while I show this girl how to treat a man! (Grabs Cassandra, throws her against a wall).

Cassandra: Get off me! Roxanne, help!

(Roxanne looks helpless against Trey, but runs up and tries to pull him off Cassandra).

Trey: Get away, this has nothing to do with you! (Pushes Roxanne away).

(Trey kisses Cassandra and reaches up her skirt) (Cassandra slaps him, he slaps her and pushes her down).

(Enter Lucas, a tall, attractive guy with curly brown hair and dark brown eyes. He has an English accent).

Lucas: Hey, what do you think you’re doing? That’s not any way to treat a lady!

Trey: I don’t think this is anything that you would know anything about, buddy.

Lucas: It doesn’t matter what its about! You don’t do that to a girl!

(Trey takes a swing at Lucas. Lucas ducks, punches Trey. Trey staggers backwards).

Lucas: I think it is time for you to leave.

Trey: This isn’t over. (Exits).

(Lucas helps Cassandra up).

Lucas: Are you alright?

Cassandra: I am now. Thank you.

Lucas: I’m Lucas.

Cassandra: Cassandra.

(Roxanne claps. Jimmy enters, holding flowers. He sees Cassandra, still holding hands with Lucas from when helped her up. Jimmy is holding flowers, but when he sees Cassandra, he drops them and turns around and leaves).

Act 1, Scene 4

Several different shops in Haley. Michael Madison is asking locals where the beautiful girl from the Diner lives. It is clear to the audience that Roxanne has truly charmed him, and he cannot get her out of his head. This process is made difficult by the local girls all trying to convince him that they ARE the beautiful girl from the diner.

In a flower shop

Michael: Excuse me miss, but do you know where I can find the beautiful girl who works at Fritz’s diner?

Crazed girl: Oh it’s me, Michael! Don’t you recognize me? This is my second job.

Michael: No, really, do you know where I can find her?

Girl: (Leaning over the counter to give herself cleavage) You must have been so tired since you don’t recognize me. Why don’t you sit down, and I’ll give you a nice massage?

Michael (Backing away): Right… well, thanks for the help. (He turns to leave, but the girl grabs him).

Girl: Michael, how can you not recognize me? Can’t I… convince you in some way that it was me?

Michael: I really do need to be going, but I’ll be back later.

Girl: I’ll be waiting, big boy.

(Michael starts to walk, and then runs out of the shop).

(Michael enters a hardware store)

Michael: (To an old man behind the counter) Excuse me sir, but do you know where I could find the girl who works at the diner?

Man: (yelling) Who are you calling an old timer?

Michael: no, no, the girl who works at the diner…

Man: You whippersnappers with no respect! I’m young! I’m cool! I’m keen! I’m swell!

Michael: Of course you are sir, but the girl… who works at the diner… oh nevermind. (Exit).

Act 1, Scene 5

Fritz’s. Closing time. The girls receive two visitors, Trey and Michael. Trey enters, grabs the flowers discarded by Jimmy, and tries to give them to Cassandra. Cassandra shows him the mark that he left on her face and tells him some things don’t go away with flowers and asks him to leave. He vows he will be back. As Roxanne is moping the floor, she hears the door. After calling that they are closed, a familiar voice comes “oh don’t tell me that. Ive been looking for you all day.” She turns slowly to see Michael, starts to go towards him, and slips in the mopwater. He walks to her to try and help her up, and slips as well. Roxanne laughs, and starts to get up, Michael pulls her down. She splashes mop water on him, he throws a sponge at her, she puts bubbles in his hair, he grabs her and kisses her, right on the floor in the mopwater.

(The girls are cleaning up the mess of the day.)

Roxanne: (mopping) Cass, you really should just forget about him. He’s terrible to you!

Cassandra: (wiping up the thrown frappe) I don’t know, Rox. Its like… the worse he treats me, the more I want him. Besides, hes not always like this. When we’re alone, he’s really sweet. Gosh listen to me. I sound like every other girl with an asshole boyfriend. I wish it was so easy to just cut him out, but we’ve been through so much its like… a part of our lives is just permanently connected, and it’s not going away anytime soon.

Roxanne: But he’s hurting you! And now, he’s hitting you? This goes beyond misunderstood bad boy.

(Trey enters, picking up the flowers discarded by Jimmy).

Trey: Cass, babydoll, I’m sorry about today. You blew me off though, you know? You made me look like a fool, a loser. I couldn’t just take that. But I didn’t mean to hurt you. (Hands her the flowers). So we cool now?

Cassandra: (without turning around): No, we’re not “cool”, you hurt me. (turns around to reveal a bruise) some things can’t be apologized away.

Trey: But, sweetie… (pulls out flowers, hands them to Cassandra).

Cassandra: (Taking the flowers) Trey, they’re beautiful… how did you remember that sunflowers and roses are my favorites? (Pauses) I have a lot to think about. I will talk to you later.

Trey: But sweet cheeks…

(Roxanne shakes her head and points to the door. Trey leaves).

Cassandra: (Sits on the floor, holding her knees) Do you see? I can’t just cut him out. He surprises you sometimes… I’m gonna go sit in the back for a second. I need to be alone for a minute. (Cassandra disappears behind the backroom door).

(Roxanne continues mopping up. She doesn’t turn around when she hears the door open.)

Roxanne: We’re closed.

Michael: Oh don’t say that. I’ve been looking for you all day, you’re not going to turn me out now, are you?

Roxanne: (Spinning around) Michael! (She starts towards him only to slip in the mop water).

Roxanne: (Laughing embarrassedly) Shit. I mean, crap. I mean… can you help me?

(Michael laughs and starts towards her. As he takes Roxanne’s hand, she pulls him down into the water with her. They both laugh. Roxanne starts to get up, but Michael pulls her back down. She splashes mop water up at him, he throws a rag at her. She puts bubbles in his hair, and as she does, he pulls her in and kisses her.)

(Cassandra reenters, looking for her sister. As she sees her kissing Michael, she looks sad and turns around and walks back out).

Act 1, Scene 6

The Park. Cassandra is sitting in the park reading. Lucas comes up to her, she is obviously happy to see him. They begin discussing the book, as she has already read it several times, and it is one of his favorites. Just as he begins to ask her out, Trey comes, complete with black eye from Lucas. He starts to pick a fight, asking Lucas what he thought he was doing messing with his girl. They fight, Cassandra cries. Trey makes Cassandra pick. Though Cassandra knows Trey is no good for her, she loves him. Lucas is her perfect man, but it is hard cutting old ties. Cassandra stands there, looking from boy to boy, wishing she had her sister.

The Park

Roxanne: Thanks for taking my shift later, Cass! I’ll see you at home later… or maybe not. (Her and Michael frolick off, hand in hand).

Cassandra: (sitting on a bench with a book) Oh yeah, I’ll be fine here… alone… again. (She starts reading).

(Lucas enters, sits next to her).

Lucas: Whacha reading?

Cassandra: (jumping) You scared me!

Lucas: Well you scare easily.

Cassandra: Well… fine.

Lucas: Fine? That’s all you got? (Notices Cassandra’s cheek) That looks like it hurt (brushes his hand against it).

Cassandra: Well, it could have been worse, if you hadn’t stopped him.

Lucas: Well what was I supposed to do? Some jerk hitting a pretty girl…

Cassandra: You’re just saying that cause you feel bad for me.

Lucas: No, I’m saying it because you are absolutely beautiful.

Cassandra: (Looking embarrassed and changing the subject) So where did you come from?

Lucas: I’m Michael Madison’s personal assistant. He just moved here.

Cassandra: Oh, believe me, I know. That’s all I hear about anymore from my sister, Roxanne. They’re together right now. Michael Madison stole my best friend.

Lucas: Ouch. Well more time to spend with your boyfriend, right?

Cassandra: After the other day, that title is on trial.

Lucas: Good. I can’t stand those weak girls who just say that he’s a good guy deep down, and no one understands him.

Cassandra: Well who knows what kind of girl I’ll turn out to be.

Lucas: I know what kind of girl I think you are, and I hope you prove me right.

Cassandra: What’s wrong with you?

Lucas: Excuse me?

Cassandra: You think I’m beautiful, you stop assholes from beating me up, you are so sweet to me. What’s wrong with you?

Lucas: I’ve been told I’m too nice.

Cassandra: No such thing.

Lucas: Oh yes there is. The best girls always want the worst guys. They want to fix them. Change them. Make their lives better.

Cassandra: Only the dumb ones.

Lucas: I believe you disprove that theory. Would a dumb girl be reading Utopia?

Cassandra: How do you know I’m not reading it to make myself look smart to attract a smart guy who will make lots of money so I can keep myself in cute shoes?

Lucas: Because someone who was trying to do that wouldn’t reveal their plot like that.

Cassandra: How do you know I’m not just so dumb that it wouldn’t occur to me not to tell you?

Lucas: Are you always this self deprecating?

Cassandra: No, I just like to be aggravating. I’m trying to be cute. Is it working?

Lucas: Maybe. (Leans in to kiss her)

(Trey enters)

Trey: Slut!

Cassandra: (Jumping up) Trey!

Lucas: Isn’t this the asshole who hit you?

Trey: I told you, you didn’t know nothing about the situation.

Lucas: Nice English. Did you even finish grammar school, or is that not good for your image?

Trey: Hey pretty boy, how would you like a knuckle sandwich?

Lucas: How original. Learn that from the thug handbook? Generic insults chapter?

Trey: Hey, I don’t know where you come from, but round here, some guy tries to kiss some other guys girl, it don’t fly.

(The boys advance on each other)

Cassandra: Trey! Lucas! Stop! Please, don’t fight over me! I’m not worth it!

Lucas: See? That’s the problem! You’ve been with a guy who makes you think you’re not for too long. He doesn’t appreciate you. I’ve known you for two days, and already I see how special you are just from being around you.

(While Lucas is preoccupied, Trey punches him. Lucas goes down)

Cassandra: (Bending down to hold Lucas’s head) Trey, what have you done?

Trey: See how fast your pretty boy goes down? Pick now. Him or me.
