I Should Be Sleeping

Jul 06, 2008 09:20

I spent way too much time last night, in the wee hours of the morning (2am to 8am) reading through reviews on cooling systems and SuperFetch and ReadyBoost. Blah.

At around 8:30a, I got hungry and went to Denny's with some notes. The waitress was pretty darn nice, and I got really happy being there listening to moms/grandmom waitresses chit chat. It kinda felt like an old fashioned diner.

I believe in tipping for service, and tipping well. I hate places that have gratuity added to the bill, and esp. the ritzy ones that like to enforce an exorbitant amount of tip that's included in the bill (where the waiters inevitably feel they deserve an extra tip for "good" service too). The snotty fucks that wait at upscale restaurants, er, I mean fine dining establishments, need to be thrown into one of those Simple Life reality shows. Oh, I know: there's that one show I saw a while back that switched two hairdressers... usually one from a ritzy area like Beverly Hills, with some biker dude from a hick town.

So my meal was about $9.50. I tipped $4. I thought about a fiver for a sec, but I decided against it since it would be more than 50% and it did seem a bit excessive. $4 was for the nice lady calling me sweetie and apologizing for my wait while she rung up the previous customer, and the two times she checked on me (over a span of 10 minutes - I devoured that thing). Anyway, I was sad she didn't even ring me up, so I could tell her I love her for getting my morning off to a good start.

Then again, I like to do stealth tips. I hate tipping in front of people (most of the time) because I feel like it's a way of buying gratitude. Or like a bribe. And I really hate people that instinctively check to see what the fucking tip is. On a side note, I really hate beggars looking to see how much you've given them before they (occasionally) say thanks. Yea, those who don't even say thank you should be run over by the car behind me.

On bowls of pho, sadly, the maximum tip is always $1. That's just always been standard, and I don't really know why. Maybe someone taught me this. I can't really picture my mom having told me this, but it coulda been her. Or maybe a cousin? I don't know. If the place is actually one where the servers come back to see if you want anything else (used to be a rare thing back in the day, but the newer ones try to be more westernized), then maybe $2? Haha.

But yea, I adhere to the 20% pretty strictly... actually, I don't really calculate it. I try to do some even number, and sometimes its 30%, or sometimes it's 19%. 15% is too low though, and if I calculate it to that much, then I add a little more. But, only if the service was decent.

I mean, what's 3 bucks to me (a caramel machiatto I don't really need, since I have instant viet coffee) when it could really make a waitress's day (or week)(and potentially earn me some amazing service next time). But only when I'm in the giving mood, and not feeling super poor (which I am right now - I owe $2200 in credit card debt, haha).

Finally, speaking of tips, I love to tip the dealer very well too. I hate cheap bastards that give a buck back to the dealer when they've just won a $100 pot. I mean, fucking c'mon. If you're not down a shitload, why not tip a little more. I do it for luck too though. Haha, sometimes I even tip the dealer when I have to throw away a good hand. ...Yea, I'm kinda stupid when it comes to money sometimes, but hey, gambling is supposed to be fun anyway =) (Oh, speaking of fun, I often like to show my cards when I've won too... I mean, fuck, I'm not gonna play these people ever again, or even sit at the table THAT long for them to figure out my freakin "strategy" -- non-existent mostly. I loveeeee to chase the river, lol).

Ok, enough of this post. I'm a little more awakened now. Esp. since I realized I need to go through 10 lectures by noon, so I can start on the other subject. Most likely, this won't happen until maybe 9pm tonight... hopefully. Based on my history, I would say I'll move onto the next subject tomorrow afternoon... =(

Btw, John Legend is pretty damn good.
