So I've was watching some TV the other day, and I was reading the Dutch subtitles to try to pick up some words...and what word do I see? Smeek! Now I bet you are wondering what it means?? Well, the answer is... beg. So I am guessing the Smeekens means like beggar or something or has something to do with being a beggar. What a proud history we have haha. Ill try to research this more and see if I come up with anything.
Tonight I am going to the first of two Hutspot dinners this week to celebrate the relief of Leiden. I found this recipe online of what Hutspot is (cause frankly I have no clue):
Ingredients: 6 onions
6 carrots, large
8 potatoes
1 sausage (Gelderse rookworst)
1/2 cup milk
2 - 4 tablespoons butter
pepper to taste
bacon, cubes
Preparation:
Peel and cut in small pieces all vegetables and boil together in slated water. Fifteen minutes before vegetables are tender, add sausages. Remove sausages and mash vegetables with milk, butter, and pepper. Served with cubed pieces of bacon well done and bacon drippings.
I'll let you know how it is.
