OK everyone, I'm sorry to fill your mailboxes with this, but it needs to be done (relax, it's not that bad). I'm doing an assignment on the Yiddishization (yes, that's now a word) of English for my linguistic anthropology class, and I need to do some sort of ethnography and/or interview to see how people conceive of whatever it is I'm studying (Yiddish in this case). So, if you all wouldn't mind answering a few questions, I will be very appreciative. If you've gotten this from me in an email, then don't mind, but if you haven't, then please respond! Let me know if you wish me to change your name in my paper; otherwise, I'll use your real name.
1). Which Yiddish words do you know?
2). What do you think they mean (without using a dictionary)?
3). Do you use Yiddish in conversation or writing?
4). If so, in what context(s)?
5). Are you understood when you use Yiddish words in a conversation?
6). How easy/difficult is it for you to explain Yiddish words to those that don't understand Yiddish?
7). How connected do you feel to the culture that spoke/speaks Yiddish (for this question, I'm saying that the culture is Judaism from the 18th century onwards, although less so in the 21st century)?
Thanks everyone! It'd be great if you could get answers to me by next Tuesday, November 15th.
