A Lolshow Chagrin

It has been 3 months since David Wang lost his virginity, his podcast virginity mind you with three manly men. The three men that he lost his podcast virginity with are David Lian,Niki Cheong and John Lim. John lim here is not podcast virgin, he is a podcast producer.

Anyway, let’s talk about the Life On Line Show a new podcast series by John Lim as he plays host to the three panel consisting of whom Serge had earlier mentioned. The LOL Show as it popularly known, consist of 30 minutes of pure unadulterated internet news from the foursome lollers to their listeners. They will talk everything and anything that has some form of hypertext transfer protocol and then some.

Their first episode where mizuages were lost, was on Oct 5th, 2010. In this episode they discussed about PDRM on Facebook and twitter‘s promoted accounts among other items.

Their start was not something to cheer about but it was good. Fast forward 10 episodes later with a small contest around episode 3 (which Serge nailed it). Following a few episodes later, LOL Show has a Blackberry Curve 3G to be given out.

Anyway, as an avid listener who perpetually listens to it one to two weeks after an episode has been published has to say this. Guys! Your audio is still bad, the only episode which the audio quality was good was episode 8. From the tweet response that Serge has gotten, the recording is done via Skype where it is recorded by David Wang with Wiretap Studio or by John Lim with MP3 Skype Recorder with post production using Audacity.

These two softwares, Serge has not use it before so it is really hard to say why the LOL Show’s audio quality is atrocious. However, he has some suggestions that might actually work for the recordings to be good, not perfect but good. Here is to some speculation that some of the four uses to built-in mics on their laptops and some uses a headset.

Everyone use a headset, the one with adjustable mouth piece with sponge is the best. Next adjust the mic piece so that it is roughly 2.5 fingers away from your mouth. This is to ensure that your breathing is not picked up by the mic. After this, adjust the sensitivity of the mic via your soundboard, not sure what would be suitable as different mics has different sensitivity.

Make a recording of yourself speaking in a normal voice, then adjust mic level with an increment of +3 (or however your system works); make a recording. After this, do the same thing but decrease it now. Listen to all three recordings, which sounds better? Choose that setting. With that setting and if your soundboard or the software that came with your headset has echo cancellation; switch it on and see if that makes a difference.

This is a hit or miss system, but in a bit Serge knows that the four lollers will get it right. Now comes to the recording, as there are two softwares being used; Serge recommends recording it with a 16000Hz bit rate. With the recording finish, let’s head down to post-production. As Audacity is being used, the audio file imported will look stereo.

Split the audio to its left and right channel, change the bit rate here. Make a recording, sounds bad? Change the rate again until a satisfactory level between the four of the lollers is achieved. Now, delete one of the channels and change it to mono. Yes mono, may sound like a bad idea but Serge has listen to some podcast where mono sounds really good.

And well that’s it, not sure if this can help out or not.

Another thing that Serge would like to add is that, in segments whereby a service is talked about; do mention the link. Some of us may not be in the know thus it is good to have a mention to the items link (even though it is mention on the LOL Show website). Have some time in the segment to talk about listener’s feedback, plug them as they too would like to be heard.

As much as this is a podcast, try not to interrupt one another. We the listeners have utmost respect on what you say but, interrupting each other? Bad manners really even though the four of you are good friends. Other than that to Niki Cheong, David Lian, David Wang whom Serge knows in real life and to John Lim, good 11 episodes.

Serge awaits the second season and more paper crumpling sessions. Anyway to the rest of the readers of Dustyhawk :: Broken Mirror; do listen to LOL Show eps 11 - Best of 2010 below.

Remember to check out LOL Show on ZineRadio and remember that the Life On Line Show is powered by Podbean. Also there is a chance for Serge to win this :

The Blackberry Curve 3G and you can too!. Anyway this phone has a 2MP camera with flash, GPS, WiFi & 3G, Optical trackpad + media keys and Blackberry Messenger. As a purveyor of all things tech, Blackberry stands out for being a business phone and this is something Serge recommends next to the Blackberry Bold II.
