photographs.
1. black-and-white labrador/australian shepherd puppy George in the alfalfa in front of Tom, squirrel hunting. we make this walk in the later evening, in the twilight or just before, while the sun is shot with blues and violets, otherwise often solid grey.
2. loading. (every time.) evening, near sunset, my boy, best friend, handing sticks of tobacco up to his dad, brother, while Ma drives the tractor. the shadows are always beautifully long, dirt covering everything and everyone, tobacco the perfect shades of yellow, green, brown.
3. walking the line, middle-aged tobacco, hoe, weeding, my boy, his brother back behind me in a long-ass plot curved like an 'S', no idea how long it is from how long it looks, except for the distance between landmarks. (this, in evening, near sunset, with treeline solid around the plot)
4. setting tobacco, rear-view of tractor/front end of setter (four chairs facing rear while pulled by tractor), from a distance. treeline frames the shot in the distance, those setting remain base human images, tiny tobacco sprouts, freshly set in damp earth. this, often early morning, afternoon in May-June-July.
5. 2-year-old Bryanna behind the wheel of Pa's truck, in Pa's lap, while the boys load styrofoam trays seeded with tobacco into the bed of the truck to be moved off to the float beds. (shed behind)
6. white plastic sheeting blowing loose over miniature greenhouse tobacco "Float Beds" with my boy, his brother, his dad, behind it. the sun glared off in wrinkles as the wind blew it an ocean in the sunset. (this, an angled shot with perspective given by a shed/siloh behind)
To make a long story short, Merry Christmas! came early and finally, I get to remember my camera wherever I go, to take pictures of the daily events enriching this life.
