Thought: does the Doctor speak English, or does he speak Gallifreyan, and his companions hear English because the TARDIS translates for them?
Does it just translate everything the Doctor says to anyone into their language automatically, and start translating for his companions once they start traveling with him? Because I'm sure there have been times when people around the Doctor have understood what the other aliens have been saying perfectly, even without being one of the Doctor's official companions. Perhaps the Doctor travels in a sort of bubble, in which anything anyone says is translated into the language of the person they are speaking to by the TARDIS.
