Rosemary is trying to organize a mitten knit-along and I am trying to join in. Today I made an impulse decision to pop into a local yarn shop. I pulled up the patterns Rosemary had found for me on my phone and showed them to the assistant. There are usually more rows per inch than stitches per inch. The pattern gauge should mention a row measurement, although if the pattern tells you when to do things based on how much length you've knit (e.g. start the decreases at the top after X number of inches), it may not be as necessary. If they only give a stitch gauge, I wouldn't worry too much about the rows. Your best bet is probably to try the mittens on Pippa as you go, if you're making them for her to wear now.
