I was surprised at how easy it was to make my own fish fingers! I used
this recipe for the fingers and
this recipe for "Alabama white sauce", although I left out the lemon juice because I didn't have any. That sauce is REALLY good. I think it would be an excellent coleslaw/salad dressing.
I liked that fish finger recipe because it didn't require the two-step egg wash + breading, so it was faster and less to clean up. It had a nice, fresh, light taste, much cleaner tasting than commercial frozen fish sticks.
Happy feast of the Immaculate Conception. :)
Here in Canada it's not a Holy Day of Obligation, which on the one hand is weak and embarrassing. Only Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia are as lame as Canada in this regard (each has only two HDOs), with Hong Kong shamefully bearing the crown of most pathetic archdiocese on earth for only having ONE HDO (it's Christmas). The worst part of this sad low HDO count is the epidemic of feast day transfer to Sundays, wherein you get absurdities like Epiphany being the 10th day of Christmas and Jesus ascending on the 43rd day.
(If you were wondering who gets the crown of most awesome archdiocese on earth in this matter, that would be the diocese of Lugano in Switzerland, which is the only place other than the Vatican to observe all 10 days of canon 1246. Props to you, Svizzeri italiani!)
But. Today I was glad it was not because it would have been really hard to get to Mass this morning, and impossible to do it last night.

I just got the new Courier (a free weekly paper which generally contains all the shopping flyers) and apparently there's an Independent Grocer opening up in the West End. You might think from the tag line of "your independent grocer" owned by "your neighbours in Davie St" that this is, y'know, an independent grocer. You would be wrong. It's a Loblaws banner, the same company that owns Real Canadian Superstore (which is like Wal-Mart only less evil because it's hard to get in the same evil league as Wal-Mart). And given their "grand opening" specials, apparently it's their high-end, sell-the-same-stuff-and-jack-up-the-prices banner, as I can see the exact same President's Choice products sold in the RCSS flyer, only at a higher price.
Being married to a guy in the grocery biz has put me on to a lot of the games. The other big important lesson being that a low-cost banner doesn't always necessarily translate to a low cost at the bottom of your receipt.
Being married to a guy in the grocery biz also has another perk lately: right now we get 10% off at all Overwaitea Food Group owned grocery stores (Save On Foods [full service], Urban Fare [high end], PriceSmart [low-cost]). PriceSmart had prime rib roasts for $6/lb, some of them were close-dated and thus marked $4 off, and then Gordon had his 10% off discount, so our little two-rib roast ended up being $4.60/lb for prime rib!!! Christmas dinner here we come!!! I've stuck it in the freezer for now.
One thing that is very I AM EXCITED FOR PARTY TIMES right now is that Gordon is currently scheduled to be off Friday the 21st through Wednesday the 26th inclusive. AND WE'RE NOT GOING ANYWHERE HAHAHAHAHA SWEET SWEET RELIEF. When I first saw it, I said to myself, "Hey, maybe we should go visit--" and then I interrupted myself "NO WE ARE GOING TO STAY HOME AND BECOME HUMAN AGAIN."
So that means I can afford to be a little teensy bit ambitious and try to do O Antiphons food again this year!
O Wisdom (oil lamp, book, dove): "Brain food" like berries, fish, or chocolate; food fried in oil; chicken.
O Lord (burning bush, the law on the tablets): Spicy food. Spicy broccoli?
O Root of Jesse (flower with root): root vegetables, obv.
O Key of David (key): Key lime cheesecake? CAN IT BE DONE?
O Dayspring (sun): Gordon is off, off, off! HALLELUJAH! TEQUILA SUNRISES ALL AROUND.
O King of the Nations (crown, cornerstone): Last time I made meatloaf (vaguely brick shaped) which worked really well; Gordon loves my meatloaf.
O Emmanuel (manger, chalice and host): Babe-in-the-manger cookies, which are easy to make and delicious.
Then Christmas Eve
THEN CHRISTMAS
oh yeah
