The others had wanted him to stop. And continuing on like everything was alright was getting harder and harder. He didn't like the helpless feeling he had been overwhelmed with. And his legs, he could learn. ]
Erik.
[ That as all Charles could think to say, without thinking over it. Moving towards the chessboard. The chair he had normally sat in was gone, and he replaced it with his wheelchair. It feels odd just answering, saying yes as if nothing has happened. He didn't know that it would be as difficult seeing him again as it was. He couldn't just pretend that the past hadn't happened and a game of chess would be alright, but it was a place to start. Talking over a game -- was a good place to start. ]
Alright. We can play.
[ He wanted to ask him to remove his helmet, but he didn't. He knew he wouldn't be able to stay out if he asked Erik of that. ]

Charles looks to the pieces on the board, and takes a deep breath. He wants to ask so many questions, but figures they're not a place to start. No, he'll ask, soon enough. He wants to know how things are going. Has he found anyone else, what are they like. He wants to now everything, maybe just latching onto someone Erik knows would put him at ease in the future. Anyone he was able to get a grasp on. ]
I missed you, too, Erik.
[ He's quiet, his voice is distant. He just takes a deep breath staring at the pieces before looking up to Erik. He rest his fingers on a pawn, and moves it. His movements, even, reflect how he has felt lately. Charles believes it is s much easier to show Erik how he has truly felt. He doesn't feel the desire to hide that beneath his work. Even after having parted ways, he only is comfortable showing those weaknesses to Erik. He returns a hand to his lap. ]
You're doing well, I trust?
[ Charles didn't want pity, nor did he want Erik to feel guilty. To save all those lives -- he would do it again. He just wished he could find a way to do it without losing anyone. ]

It is, permanent.
[ He finally moves, watching the pieces. ]
I forgive you, Erik.
[ He always would, too. He felt like, in some way -- he had to ease Erik's mind. Though he doubted that saying that would really help him much. He wanted to try. There was just so much tension in the air, and Charles wanted just one more time where they were just friends and they felt like equals. ]

You know me well enough to know I can't do that, Erik.
[ No, Erik, he doesn't need to read your mind. He can tell - he can tell you're guilty. ]
I could never do that.
[ Abandoning someone like himself, letting them believe they are a lone. That wasn't even a thought in his mind. Charles knew what it was like to feel alone. ]

I am.
[ He looks at Erik, his expression barely readable. There was some hurt, there was some sadness, and guilt there. The ability to watch Erik like that was so familiar. He normally would have smiled and laughed in moments like this, but he couldn't even get himself to do that anymore. ]
I am tired, but [ He pauses ] ...things get better every day.

No, I wouldn't like for you to leave.
[ Charles sighs and taps a finger on the table. Finally, after considering the request for several moments, his eyes meet Erik's as he speaks. ]
Can you remove your helmet?
[ It wasn't as though he needed to locate him, or wanted to search his mind for anything. He just needed to feel like it was Erik sitting there across from him. ]

Calm your mind, my friend.
[ He moves his hand to allow his fingers to tap gently on the table near the board, eying that helmet. ]
It seems like you have already forgotten the things that I told you. I know that we disagree, but I wouldn't ever want you to find yourself lost in that again.

[ Charles leans forward just a little bit, his hand still at the side of the table. He's watching, not probing, but still - feeling things. ]
You've just started on your own path, Erik.
[ Charles looks like he is contemplating the chessboard, but doesn't take any action on it. ]
Why are you lost?
