Haiti in Context

Feb 10, 2010 22:02

Haiti has endured horrific suffering and little hope for most of modern history. Three excellent articles published in Consortium News recently help to shed light on a sad past.

Robert Parry covers the brutal French involvement, and shows the importance to US history of Haiti:

Lisa Pearce over two articles then covered from the US occupation of the 1920s to Baby Doc, and then from Aristide onwards: Part 1 Part 2.

After the devastating earthquake of 2010, can we see any light for the future? Maybe. Johann Hari in the London "Independent" at the weekend shows why the "shock doctrine" must be avoided, and how thanks to public pressure, the IMF (and the G7) are working to cancel Haiti's debt.
