"Close your eyes."
There’s a slight breeze in the air but it is excitement that ruffles his hair and sends a sharp thrill running down Kyungsoo’s spine as he looks up at Chanyeol with wide eyes. This is it. It is going to happen tonight with Chanyeol, he is sure of it.
His first kiss.
It’s a warm night and they are standing underneath the rosy glow of a lamppost in a park near Kyungsoo’s house. For once, the park is completely empty of children; there are no screams, no giggles - just silence and the steadily increasing heartbeats of two people.
"Why do I have to close my eyes?" Kyungsoo asks and he cringes slightly when his voice comes out timid and shaky.
Chanyeol shakes his head and Kyungsoo flushes at the intense gaze the taller one gives him. It’s like he’s seeing right through him. "Just do it."
Kyungsoo closes his eyes tentatively, head drawing back in nervous anticipation. He can feel Chanyeol leaning closer towards him and reflexively, he shrinks back into his own body, suddenly being very hyper aware of his surroundings.
Kyungsoo squeezes his eyes shut and puckers his lips subtly, waiting for the kiss.
That doesn't come.
Instead, Chanyeol pulls away last minute, letting out a chuckle. "You've been watching too many dramas," he says, pressing his forehead against the other boy’s and Kyungsoo nearly falls on the ground right then and there because oh my god he has never been so mortified in his life.
Flushing in a shade that he could only describe as Crayola Radical Red (with a touch of Ruby Red Glitter), Kyungsoo knocks his forehead into Chanyeol’s as he glares up at the boy with as much venom as he can. Embarrassment burns into him, ringed with a thick layer of disappointment. Kyungsoo doesn’t really know why he’s so upset; it’s not like Chanyeol had told him he was going to kiss him - maybe it was because he had wanted it so badly, or maybe because for a second, he had thought Chanyeol wanted it too.
"I hate you, you're a tease," Kyungsoo mutters, still flushing. Stupid boys. He doesn't need them. He doesn't need a kiss either. He is an independent young man that doesn't need anyone. Shooting Chanyeol another dirty look, he spins on his heels and walks away.
"Hey Soo! Where are you going?"
"Home." Kyungsoo answers primly, picking up the remnants of his dignity and trying to make a dignified exit.
"Don't go," Chanyeol pleads behind him, "I'm sorry, it was a bad joke."
Kyungsoo tries to ignore him. It wasn’t funny. His face still smarted with humiliation and false hope. "See you at school tomorrow, Chanyeol."
"Yah, Do Kyungsoo!"
The voice sounds very close now and Kyungsoo knows that Chanyeol is right behind him but he keeps walking, stalking towards the next lamppost. "Chanyeol I-" He’s about to turn around to yell at his boyfriend some more when a hand wraps around his wrist and tugs him back. Kyungsoo stumbles, body twisting and hands flying out, bracing for impact against the asphalt but Chanyeol's got him - holding him steady in his arms. He's much too close, Kyungsoo realizes as he looks up through his lashes at the younger boy. He has one hand on Chanyeol's chest and the other clutching his bicep. Their bodies are pressed flush against one another and dimly, Kyungsoo thinks that they probably looked like the cover of some Harlequin romance novel - except he wasn't some busty damsel in distress... and Chanyeol wasn't shirtless.
"Uh," he says dumbly, blinking back the embarrassment. Chanyeol stares back, looking as if he had been shocked.
"Kyungsoo, close your eyes."
Kyungsoo jerks back. "What? No! You're just going to tease me again!"
"Please," Chanyeol pouts, trying his best to coax his boyfriend. "Just close your eyes."
No way in hell was he gonna do that again. Kyungsoo's eyes dart left and then right, searching for something - anything - that could save him from looking at Chanyeol.
He finds his saviour in the form of an old lady, staring at them suspiciously as she totters past them on the path. "Why is she looking at us?" Kyungsoo mutters, taking the opportunity to dance out of Chanyeol's arms and fixing his eyes on the lady.
Chanyeol sighs exasperatedly. "Kyungsoo."
"I won't do it until she's gone," Kyungsoo babbles nervously, waving Chanyeol off distractedly. "....She keeps staring, what is she-”
"Kyungsoo, look at me."
The pads of Chanyeol's fingertips brush gently against Kyungsoo's chin, pushing his face up towards him. Swallowing audibly, Kyungsoo allows himself to look at him.
Gone is the teasing lilt to Chanyeol’s eyes, instead, Chanyeol shines with determination and courage. Behind the fire though, Kyungsoo sees a hint of fragility and tenderness - a look that makes him soften under Chanyeol’s gaze.
"Close your eyes." Chanyeol whispers.
And this time, Kyungsoo does.
There is something oddly frightening about waiting for your first kiss to happen, Kyungsoo thinks, eyelids fluttering as he tries to peek at what Chanyeol is doing in front of him. There is no indication on how it will turn out - whether there will be fireworks or something else when his lips meets yours for the first time. What it's like to kiss someone back. Or how you even go about kissing someone back. Yikes, now that he thought about it, he had no clue on how to actually kiss someone back. There was no time for a quick Google however, because Chanyeol's lips suddenly appear along the edge of Kyungsoo's vision.
Chanyeol noses his way along Kyungsoo's cheekbone before ducking in and pressing his lips carefully - like they were both made of glass - against Kyungsoo's.
Kyungsoo freezes. There’s a split second when Kyungsoo’s mind is bombarded by a number of thoughts. Should I kiss him back? How do you kiss someone back? Where’s fucking Google when you need it? ASLDIWUENGgggg The thoughts quickly disappear as he shuts himself down and just allows his body to react. Kyungsoo squeezes his eyes closed and kisses back tentatively, arms snaking up to Chanyeol’s shoulder blades to hold him close. He presses his lips to the other boy’s, trying to channel all the fondness he felt for Chanyeol into the kiss.
And just like that, it was over.
They break apart, the kiss dissolving into a hug. Chanyeol pushes his face into the crook of Kyungsoo's neck, grinning slightly. "Well, I guess I levelled up." he mumbles into his boyfriend's hair.
Kyungsoo presses a chaste kiss to Chanyeol’s cheek, blushing slightly. “Yeah,” he replies faintly.
They part underneath the lamppost in the deserted park, and Kyungsoo runs all the way home, his heart thudding in his chest and the memory of Chanyeol’s lips touching his imprinted in his mind.
There had been no fireworks, or the electric sparks that he had read about in so many books, but there was still something. His first kiss wasn’t at all what he had expected, but there was a flicker of something special in Kyungsoo’s heart, something warm settling in his belly whenever he replayed the memory over and over again. It was his first kiss, one that he will never forget, and certainly one that will eventually lead to others.
