Need To Breed Given Priority

Half-billion-dollar-equivalent appropriations for... animal breeding.
But the headline, in a country losing 1m people per year, makes you think something else first.

Well, fewer people with superior chickens is probably the best outcome anyhow.

Thanks to two hours a week instead of twenty, my Russian has really started to decay. It's not even the lack of formal classes. It's the lack of TV advertisements and embarrassing street collisions and Vedomosti every day.

Seeing bits of Andrei Rublev again made me want to visit Vladimir. Remembered again how graphic and disturbing the film actually is.

I realized in particular for the first time just how unnerving the lack of a grand soundtrack during the Tatar rape and pillage of the city was. Without John Williams et al. in the background, the clomp of hooves down a side alley or the surprising quiet of a throat being slit seems too subdued to be so violent. We're used to sound overload to indicate the moral and emotional gravity of a situation on the screen.

Violence is stupendously mundane. More mundane than we'd like to think.
