How Torchwood told loyal fans they don't give a crap about them, or why series 3 was not good

Jul 24, 2009 17:10

I was hoping I cooled off and I'd end up skipping the last Torchwood rant that was boiling in me, but RTD just couldn't help himself and he ended up pissing me off all over again with his new interview. So here it is.

Torchwood series 3 spoilers, obviously. )

!: rant, !: pissed off, tv show: torchwood

- You mention the characters acting OOC, and I've seen this mentioned before. Could you explain that some more? To me, I felt like watching the exact same characters as before, if not grown up a bit.
There were just some things that didn't sit well with me, and felt out of place, didn't fit with the characters where we left them when we last saw them.
Jack and Ianto walking into a room with 456 being one of them, like I explained already. It just doesn't seem to me like something they'd do. Or why would Jack even bring Ianto (or anyone else) in a room with bad guys, when they know nothing about them, except that they're dangerous, when they had no plan. It would be more logical for him to go alone, since he can't get hurt. He's not the type to put his team in danger on purposes, especially when it's not necessary.
Then, like I said in the review, I don't see why Jack broke down and was ready to surrender this time? What made it so different? The man has been through *a lot*, it doesn't seem like him to crack like that under a pressure, or because of grief. To me it felt more like they had character do that because they wanted the plot to go in that direction, rather than explain convincingly what caused his behaviour.
I mean, speaking as a Jack/Ianto shipper, I'd LOVE to be able to say I've seen how Ianto is that extra special to Jack to be just that more important to Jack, that losing him would be too much to handle, unlike all previous times Jack lost someone. And *that* is why Jack broke down. But - show me, don't tell me. Jack and Ianto were still in a phase where they were feeling out their relationship and deciding how to define it and how to act accordingly. You'd think their connection would have been more obvious if Ianto was that important to Jack (as Rusty admitted in AfterElton interview - that Ianto *is* the reason why Jack broke). It just doesn't feel well executed.
As for Ianto, what was with the return of "sir"? They made a big deal out of him not calling Jack that anymore in season 2 premier, and here he reverted back to calling him that. The first time, after he brings him the new coat, I though it was cute, maybe a play to Jack in a uniform. But then he did it again, I think at least once when they were getting in the car? It sounds silly written down, but it's hard for me to explain - it's more that the characters felt off somehow and the little things like that felt out of place for me.

I hope you don't see this as me thinking you're wrong in disliking CoE, because I can totally understand your reasoning for not liking it, I just don't feel the same.
Not at all. I understand many people liked it. :)
I don't mind discussion. It's fun. :D

Pt.2! I really am talking
