I was hoping I cooled off and I'd end up skipping the last Torchwood rant that was boiling in me, but RTD just couldn't help himself and he ended up pissing me off all over again with his
new interview. So here it is.
(
Torchwood series 3 spoilers, obviously. )
*breathes after reading it all*:)
It was quite long, wasn't it. Eep.
However, I also liked the darker road they took, but I can totally understand if you don't like that Torchwood, a.k.a "campy, fun show we loved because of the campy, fun aspects" went there.
I just think they dealt with darker aspects better before. We had Jack give away that little girl in Small Worlds, sit with the guy while he killed himself in Out of Time, Owen died, Tosh & Owen died, and so on - yet Torchwood still managed to keep its distinctive style, personality and mood [with the camp & fun on top of all that] throughout. And that was severely lacking in series 3.
- The reason why Ianto went in with Jack was indeed stupid, but part of the fun for me has always been how incompetent TW is, tbh. (though it wasn't so much fun this time:( )
But usually when they charge in somewhere they don't have much time to prepare.
Here there was this giant build up. They approached Lois, gave her contacts to wear, taped the conversations to blackmail the government. They had all this time to prepare. And when the PM asked Lois with which army will she stop them, and she replies "Torchwood", and Jack and Ianto walk into that building all badass, you're going all "HELL YEAH!!" and expecting how they'll put their plan into motion now. Instead it turns out they did absolutely nothing to come up with a plan in all that time as they were setting it all up, and their only option is to taunt the aliens? It's insulting really. They're not that stupid, lazy and suicidal.
While I do agree he should be able to take in criticism if he can accept praise, the argument that "this is the internet" doesn't excuse the things that were way more personal than critisism, IMO. I strongly feel you shouldn't condone anything on the internet you wouldn't condone in real life. The person behind the computer may be just as hurt/scared off by the threats/personal attacks.
Which is why I started with how I don't condone fandom's asshaty behaviour towards Moran, and how that goes for any threats or attacks. :)
But I do think as far as criticism goes, fans should have the right to complain until they're blue in the face. Just because someone is on the writing team does not mean they should get a special treatment, and everyone should act extremely careful around them not to hurt their feelings with things they might not like to hear.
I agree with "act online as you act in RL" motto. I tend to stick to that one.
