It was over. She had done the work that she'd set out to do. To vanquish the wraith from the throne and in doing so, avenge the murder of her husband. And the task had been accomplished with relative ease, for she had planned her strategy and her enemy was unsuspecting. She had done it, and it was over. And yet...

And yet she was still not happy. The death of the wraith Seven of the Nine, the revenge that she had so coldly calculated, left her unfulfilled. Though the thought of her revenge and the planning of it had brought her pleasure, the actual carrying out of it had not. It did not make her happy to kill her foe, nor did she rejoice over her fallen enemy. This was not what she wanted.

Because even though she had regained the throne, her husband was still dead. And she, with a heavy heart concluded that he would remain so. It wasn't hard these days to get a new lease on life. If he were coming back, he would be back by now. But no, she was still alone. Victorious, yet weary and trembling.

There was much work to be done, she knew. Though the wraith was now gone, foul things still filled the city, and it was still shrouded in darkness. She would deal with them. She would repair, rebuild, renew. She would be strong for her people, and for her children as well. But she knew that things wouldn't be the same. Not ever. Not without him.
