Birthday Party

October 2015

“Justin. Justin!”

Every morning, Justin Taylor woke up at six-thirty to start his day. Except on weekends, which were his only time to sleep in ever. But apparently not today. He did his best to ignore the constant shaking of his shoulder and tried to turn over, but sleep evaded him, so he opened his eyes to see who the offender was.

“You have to wake up, Justin. Mom said you’re going to take me to the party.”

Justin glared through squinted eyes at his little brother, whose face was looming above him. He had shared a room with his little brother, Kyle, for five years now, and in general, it wasn’t so bad, but it was times like this that he wished he were still in Phil’s room. Right then he was tempted to pull the blanket over his head and ignore the world.

“What party?” he asked instead.

“Abby’s birthday party,” Kyle said, bouncing beside the bed. “Mom said that you had to go instead of her since she’s helping Grandma today.”

The last thing Justin wanted to do was get out of bed for some stupid kid birthday party, but the pout on Kyle’s face nearly broke his heart, so he threw off the covers and sat up in bed, his legs over the edge of the mattress. “What time is the party?” he asked, stretching.

“Eleven.” Kyle had already brought Justin his shoes and was digging through Justin’s drawers to find something for him to wear. “Hurry up. I don’t want to be late.”

The clock on his nightstand said it was five after nine. Depending on if the party was at Abby’s house or somewhere else, he would definitely have time to shower. “Slow down there, buddy,” he said to Kyle and then stood up from the bed, stretching again. “We have plenty of time. I’m gonna go see if Mom left the address for me downstairs.”

“She did.” Kyle pulled out a blue t-shirt from Justin’s drawer and held it out to him. “Wear this.”

Justin took the shirt from his brother and threw it on his bed. “Okay, but I can pick out my own pants.”

“Hurry, hurry!” Kyle said before he ran out of the room.

Justin grabbed his clothes and then quickly got into the shower before going downstairs to find the address before they left.

“A birthday party at the zoo?” Kyle pressed his nose to the glass while Justin’ drove through the winding streets around the Como Zoo. “Justin, why are there so many cars here?”

“Because it’s one of the first nice weekends of the year,” Justin muttered. “I hope I find a spot soon, or we’re going to be late.”

Kyle turned to look at Justin, who was hunched over the steering wheel looking slightly peeved over the whole thing. “I thought we left early?”

“I’m sorry, Kyle.” Justin glanced at him. “But I can’t find a spot to park. We’re going to have to walk I think.” He turned left onto Como Avenue and started driving in the opposite direction of the zoo.

Kyle watched a line of cars driving by, no doubt going to try to find a place exactly where they had been just driving. He looked straight forward when Justin crossed Lexington and found a spot on the other side of the street. “It’s ten forty-five,” he said.

Justin looked at him and grinned. “Then we’ll have to run, right?”

Kyle grinned back and then unbuckled his seatbelt so he could throw open the door. With Abby’s present in his arms, he met Justin on the other side of the car. There were other cars zooming past them, so he shifted the present into one arm and then took Justin’s hand. Together, they crossed the street and made their way on the sidewalk towards the zoo.

It was a nice day. The sun was shining, and the birds were singing. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, and the weather was just warm enough to feel good against their skin with the sun shining down on them. It didn’t take long for them to jog to the front gates of the zoo, where they passed by the conservatory and the collection area and walked into the main building. There was a big pink sign that said, ‘Abby’s Birthday, This way!’ It had an pink arrow on it pointing to the left. Justin and Kyle followed the sign which took them to the door of the party room.

“I’ll schmooze the moms, you take the daughters,” Justin said, winking at Kyle.

Kyle dropped Justin’s hand at the door and looked up at him. “What does it mean to schmooze?”

Justin pushed the door open. “Never mind and go put your present on the table.”

The second they stepped inside, they were assaulted with a sea of pink. Pink, pink everywhere. It was hanging on the ceilings and walls and draped over the tables. A display of pink unicorns were on one table, complete with gift bags for everyone. Beside it, a large display of pink cupcakes were displayed on tiered layers. Both Justin and Kyle blinked their eyes to try and get used to the shock of it all.

“I think I’m blind,” Justin mumbled, reaching for Kyle and grabbing him by the shoulder.

“It’s Kyle!”

A little girl dressed in--you guessed it--pink, ran up to Kyle. She pushed Justin’s hand off his shoulder and then grabbed both of Kyle’s shoulders roughly. Kyle thought she was going to kiss him for a second and tried to move away, but she just leaned in for a hug.

“I’m so glad you’re here!” she said over the noise of the party.

Kyle handed Abby the present after she let him go. It was wrapped in yellow and green paper and looked oddly out of place amongst all the pink. “Happy Birthday,” he said when she took it.

“Thanks.” Abby looked down at the present as though its colors made it suspicious. “I’ll go put it with the others.” Before she turned around, she gave Kyle a smile. “You’ll dance with me, right?”

“Um…” Kyle gave her an uneasy smile. “Okay?”

He watched Abby bounce away to the present table. Justin patted him on the back, reminding him that his brother was still standing beside him. “Way to schmooze, Kyle. You already have a dance lined up.”

Whatever schmoozing was, Kyle was pretty sure he wanted no part of it. He looked away from Justin and out at the party. It was mostly girls, and they were mostly dressed in pink. He felt like a little out of place.

“I guess I’ll go sit with the other adults,” Justin said, running a hand through his curls. “Some of those moms look pretty young. Maybe there are a few older sisters.”

Kyle watched Justin walk away from him, leaving him standing there alone by the door. Before he could think about what to do next, Abby had rushed back to him and took his hand, pulling him out onto the makeshift dance floor.

“This is my favorite song!” she said, smiling at him. She had just put her hands back on his shoulders when more girls, all dressed in pink or pink-adjacent dresses came up to them and gathered around him.

“Who’s your friend, Abby?” a cute blond girl asked. “He’s really cute.”

Abby wedged herself between Kyle and the blond. “Butt out, Katie. I’m dancing with Kyle”

“Maybe we should ask Kyle who he wants to dance with,” another girl said from beside Katie.

Kyle looked around at all the girls. If he had known this was going to be a girl party, he would have asked Justin to drop his present off and then they could actually do something fun instead. He stood on his tiptoes so he could see Justin by the other adults. Justin was leaning into a pretty lady with his hundred watt smile. He couldn’t believe that that was Justin’s idea of fun.

“So, who do you want to dance with?” Abby asked him, her hands on her hips. “And think before you answer, because it is my birthday.”

Kyle didn’t know what to do. It looked to him like no matter what he said, lots of girls would get upset. He supposed the right thing to do was to dance with the birthday girl, but honestly, he wanted to grab Justin and get out of there.

“Actually…” He looked around him for the nearest escape, his eyes landing on the restrooms. “I have to go to the bathroom. I’ll be back.” Maybe. With an uncomfortable smile, he made his way through the girls and to the bathroom, where he dashed inside the men's room and leaned up against the wall on the other side.

This was not a fun birthday party.

“So you must have had your daughter when you were pretty young,” Justin was saying to a mom by the food table. He plucked a cream puff from a platter and took a bite.

“Yeah, I was only fifteen.” The mom took a sip of her drink and looked up at him with a blush. “It’s been rough, but worth it. How about you? You look really young to have a kid.”

Justin smiled. “I don't. He’s my little brother.” He looked over to where he had left Kyle to find that he was nowhere in sight.

The mom was looking at him skeptically. “So that makes you how old?”

He looked back at her with a brilliant smile. “Old enough,” he said reaching for another cream puff. “But I have to go check on my brother. Save me a seat.” With one last smile, popped the cream puff in his mouth and walked away to search for Kyle.

The dance floor was filled with girls, but Kyle was nowhere to be found. Justin walked past them to the other side of the room where the restrooms were located and pushed through the door to the men's room. There he found Kyle standing against the wall next to the sink.

“You okay?” he asked, stopping inside the door.

Kyle looked at him for a moment before answering. “They're like vultures.”

“Who?”

“All those girls. Can we leave?” Kyle pushed himself away from the wall. “Please, Justin?”

Justin looked back towards the door and thought of the hot mom he had left by the food table. His chances with her were pretty slim considering he was still in high school, and not to mention he had Kyle in tow. “Yeah. I'll say you're sick, and we'll leave. This party is kinda lame, anyway. What the hell is with all the pink?”

“Totally lame. And why do they have all those unicorns when the party’s at a zoo? Unicorns aren’t even real animals,” Kyle said, sneaking between Justin and the door. “I’ll pretend I have a stomach ache. You do the talking. How does this look?” He hunched over with his hands on his stomach and made a face like he was in pain.

Justin smiled. “Perfect. And I don’t know what the deal with the unicorns is. Whatever floats her boat, I guess.” He reached over Kyle’s head and pushed the door open.

The second they walked back out to the party area the little kids once again encircled Kyle. He didn't break character and kept clutching at his stomach.

“Sorry, girls, but I'm afraid Kyle is sick and needs to go home.” Justin grabbed his brother’s arm to lead him towards the door. “Say goodbye, Kyle.”

“Bye,” Kyle said, a pained expression still on his face. “Happy birthday, Abby.”

Abby stood in the center of the other girls, looking sad. “Bye, Kyle. Feel better.”

Justin was impressed by Kyle’s acting. If he didn't know any better he'd think his brother was actually ill. He led Kyle towards the door, stopped briefly where the moms were still standing together. “Sorry, ladies, but we gotta jet. Kyle’s not feeling well.”

The mom he had been trying to flirt with earlier looked at him from over her punch glass. “Goodbye, Justin. Nice meeting you.”

He gave her another smile. “A pleasure, always,” he said and then opened the door, gently pushing Kyle out in front of him.

“Are you gonna date that lady?” Kyle asked when they were safely outside.

Justin hopped down the steps to the street. “Naw. I was just messing around.”

Kyle jumped down beside him. “So what are we doing now?”
