Bridges
Prologue
By Lori Finnegan
2013

It was dusk by the time he got out of town. The sky was that perfect shade of blue; somewhere between sky and midnight, the color that only lasted for a few moments and then was gone. Jarred Lancaster drove as fast as he could and wished that his rambling thoughts could be as lucky to disappear into the night just like the evening sky.

He had gotten home the day before, barely unpacked, just to pack it all up again the next day and throw everything he could in his car. He didn't call anyone, not even his own mother. He didn't send out emails or texts. All he did was leave a note where he knew someone would find it explaining one simple thing; that he had gone, and he didn't know if and when he was coming back.

It was all up in the air now. Yet just when he hit the open roads and the clear skies of Northern California, he had never felt more free.

He was pretty sure he would never return.
