Felix Merriville was straightening the folds in his cravat and bounding down the stairs when he heard a familiar chatter echoing a little ways down the hall. Once he set foot at the bottom of the stairs, he walked down the hall and poked his head into the drawing room to not see two sisters, but three of them. Frederica, Charis, and little Bryony, all sitting on the sofa and bent over a collection of pears.

No doubt Alverstoke had gifted them to Frederica.

Felix didn't make himself known and ducked back into the hallway. He was in no mood to pay compliments to his sisters and comment on jewelry. That was when he noticed the butler opening the door three more females and stepped back a little so he wouldn't be seen.

Through the cracks of the banister, he recognized the guests as the Rivenhall family. Cecilia, Selina, and Amabel Rivenhall, along with loud mouthed Sophy Stanton-Lacy. He stayed right where he was, tucked under the stairwell until they were all ushered into the drawing room and out of sight. Then he came out, free.

To his surprise, Charles Rivenhall was standing there on the doorstep with a smile on his face. "You look as though you need to be rescued."

"From all these females?" Felix said. "Indeed, I do!"
