Allison hiked her bag onto her shoulder and turned to look at her companions. "Are you guys ready?"

Nick had watched her pack up the candles, incense, flashlight, and a voice reorder into the bag with a somber expression on his face. He wasn't sure how he had gotten suckered into this one.

Vanessa was clutching onto his onto his arm with her fingernails digging in. "I-I guess..." she said.

Cate pushed open the screen door, causing a loud noise and making the others jump. "Let's get this over with."

Nick met her eyes, and he could see that she shared the same ideas as he did. This whole thing was a crock. And that's when he noticed a little twinkle in Cate's eyes. Could she be upnto something? Before he could analyze it any further, she had turned away and Allison was following her out the door. Nick and Vanessa followed suit.

The whole way down the trail alongside the lake, Nick was forced to listen to Vanessa's nervous chatter while he caught glimpses of Cate and Allison's conversation about séances ahead of them. His friends in Hollywood would think he'd lost his marbles. Or at least they'd think Minnesotans were a little crazy.

After walking for a good ten minutes, they came to a beach area by the lake where trees hung over the water at the edges and in the middle, there was a large sandy area.

Vanessa clutched tighter to Nick's arm. "Is this the spot? Are you sure, Allison?" She looked up at Nick. "I'm already feeling creeped out."

Nick glanced at Cate. Whatever she was planning was going to be very easy at this rate.

"This is it." Allison set her bag on the sand and then took a seat beside it. "Our last séance was sort of a bust." She shot a pointed look in Nick's direction. "But this place... has real history, and real stories of hauntings."

Cate sat down adjacent of her. "As if a cemetery doesn't?" she asked. "I'm sure the cemetery has way more history than a silly lake shore."

Allison was taking her things from her bag and didn't bother to look up at Cate. "I've researched our cemetery extensively, and there are no documented stories of actual hauntings. Though I won't argue that there is history. How could there not be?"

Nick sat down on the sand, as did Vanessa. "I don't know, Allison.. how many times have you told me you've felt a presence during funerals and burials?" He gave her a smirk.
She frowned at him from across their little circle. "Let's just get started."

Nick and Cate exchanged a smile.

Allison lit the candles which she had propped up in the sand in silence and then they all listened to the frogs and the crickets... and Vanessa's teeth chattering. Nick almost found himself assuring her there was no such thing as ghosts, but he didn't want to suffer Allison's wrath. Also, he didn't think he could convince her. Sitting out here with a bunch of candles in the dark with a person like Allison was pretty convincing to some people. Not to mention, he had a feeling Cat was up to some trick to freak the two of them out.

"Everyone hold hands," Allison said and reached out her hands to both Cate and Vanessa.

Nick, whose hand already had dents in it from Vanessa's fingernails, reached out for Cate's hand, which was warm and much more pleasant to hold than Vanessa's.

Cate gave him a wink.

Yep, she was definitely up to some kind of trick. He was sure of it.

Allison bowed her head and began to say some sort of gibberish that sounded suspiciously similar to a prayer. Vanessa stared at her for a moment with wide eyes and then reluctantly bowed her head as well. Nick turned to Cate. He saw her roll her eyes and then she reluctantly looked down. Nick figured that if everyone else was looking down there was no reason for him to, so he didn't. It's not like it was his mother elbowing him at church or anything. And even then...

"Spirits abound!" Allison said in a louder voice, her head suddenly pointing to the sky. "Grant us the permission to access your world!"

Nick felt a pain in his left hand and bit his tongue so he wouldn't cry out. Dammit, the next time they were alone, he was going to make the suggestion that Vanessa should cut her nails. Short.
