The sun rose over Las Vegas illuminating the alley ways that ran between the glittering hotels. Sam Marquez hurried into the Montecito where her latest whale was waiting. Another day with the reminder that she was alone but she had chosen this life.
Logan Newman was a dot com billionaire with a taste for the simple things in life. He preferred the smallest suite as well as fresh fruit for breakfast. He had requested a tour of Old Vegas in a VW Bug like the first car he had owned.
Sam rode the elevator to the suites. She knocked, “Logan, it’s Sam.”
He opened the door, “Morning. Join me for breakfast.”
“Of course. When you’re ready, I found the 1968 VW Bug you requested.”
“Ruby red?”
“Yes. Lily Flynn will be your driver. She was a showgirl in the ‘60s and looks forward to telling you tales of Old Vegas.”
“Perfect. Care to join us?”
“I can’t but have fun.”
Sam watched as Lily and Logan headed off. She would have loved to join them but she had chosen being alone to avoid the pain of another broken heart.

They flitted in and out of her life causing mischief for which she was blamed . Trying to explain made matters worse so she became withdrawn and avoided other kids. It took years until she met her half-sisters and learned about her parents, a witch and a Whiter lighter, which made her a powerful witch as well as a fierce White lighter with a fantastic protective instinct toward the innocent. Now she could handle her invisible friends and lead a fairly normal life.

Her hands were covered in blood but not her own. She had wielded the knife when the blue-gloved men had tried to grab her and return her to the Academy, a scientific installation funded by the Blue Sun corporation. River Tam continued to taunt them as she sang, “Two by two, hands of blue” and danced as well.
They managed to escape but left a trail of blood that vanished as quickly as they did. What a disaster but the Academy was determined to retrieve River no matter what resources were expended in money and lives. She was an experiment to be continued and a hint of the Academy’s sinister nature.
