Title: Weeds
Author: RiverOtter
Fandom/Character(s)/Pairing(s): CSI Miami; Alexx Woods
Genre: Fan fiction
Rating: PG
Words: 147
Challenge/Prompt: Starting sentence
Warnings: None
The garden was overgrown now. Alexx walked along the barely visible path. Once this had been a place of beauty but the long hours as medical examiner and raising two children had left her exhausted and too tired to take care of the garden. She paused to look at what had once been her herb garden. Now the weeds grew tall and swayed in the breeze. She recalled her joy at harvesting fresh herbs for dinner. Tomato vines and corn stalks had covered the arbor where the family had eaten dinner in the cool evening. She remembered laughter as her children had helped pick tomatoes and corn which she tossed into a pot of boiling water. That had been the sweetest corn she had ever eaten. Enough recollections, it was getting dark and tomorrow would be busy. Back in to get ready for bed and hopefully sleep.

Title: Tricked
Author: RiverOtter
Fandom/Character(s)/Pairing(s): Numb3rs; Amita Ramanujan
Genre: Fan fiction
Rating: PG
Words: 228
Challenge/Prompt: Played for a fool
Warnings: None
Amita Ramanujan had submitted her latest paper on combinatorics to The Annals of Combinatorics, a quarterly journal. The letter she received back suggested that she was guilty of plagiarism since Winston Rhys-Winston had already submitted an identical paper. She swallowed and thought Why do I know that name? Leafing through her lists of teaching assistants, she found it. Winston had been her teaching assistant last semester. She had discovered him riffling through her desk and played her for a fool by saying that he was looking for the paper that he had left for her to look at. In fact, he had handed her a file with the paper inside. Obviously he had seen the final draft of her combinatorics paper and stolen it. She headed for her computer and pulled up a file. Her notes and drafts were still there, date and time stamped. She made hard copies and sent them to the journal with an explanation.
******
Amita slit the envelope open. It was a letter from Thomas Springer, the editor of The Annals of Combinatorics. He had received her package and examined the article closely. It was obvious that Winston was guilty of plagiarism. As a result, he was banned from publishing in the annals. Several other mathematical journals had been notified as well. He apologized and offered to include her article in the next issue.

She stopped under a cherry tree and smiled at this marker of spring. Winter was finally over with spring here at last, She heard birdsong as well. Filled with happiness, she headed back to her place to enjoy breakfast in the open air.
