Ok, we all know he wrote "RFC 1149.5 specifies 4 as the standard IEEE-vetted random number.", and hundreds of people looked up RFC 1149, one of the always entertaining April 1 posts (at least they're entertaining to regular RFC readers). Yes, back at iBeam, I was the resident RFC reader. I also read patents and contracts and ... lots of stuff.
There is no "RFC 1149.5". It was a joke! He made a funny!
BUT, if you start thinking "Hey, I read this in a comic strip!", you might come to accept that there may be a hidden truth. So, naturally, I looked up IEEE 1149.5, and found Core Class Command 4 was the first of four Multicast Select commands. While still being very IEEE, it didn't seem very random to me.. Section 21.4 "Test Data Storage ports", which includes port #4 as a Test Data Storage port, a home for what might be relatively random numbers. Then, after spending 15 minutes on the topic, leaned back, smiled and remembered: I'm getting paid to do this right now.
I love my job.
