Gumbo

I make gumbo, me.

As I had been working out and was sweaty, I took a quick shower while the stew simmers. Okra slime doesn't rinse off easily. It sort of spreads first. For a few minutes there my arms and torso were pretty slick. Weird feeling.

Slime or no slime, okra is one of my very favorite vegetables. Can't wait for the gumbo!

Gumbo, yum! Thanks for reminding me that I have okra from my CSA to use up. I bet I will be making gumbo this week. :-)

Yum! I love being able to get fresh okra this time of year.

Happy belated birthday, by the way. So far my 40's have been a "learning time" physically, but wonderful in many other ways.

i thought the 'slime' was why people used it in soups; it's supposed to be as good a thickener as flour or better. i've never rinsed the 'slime' off when making vegetarian gumbo.

yum, gumbo.

Ah, I think I left a sentence out of my entry. I didn't rinse the okra after I cut it. The slime stayed on my hands after I sliced the okra, even after several washings at the sink, and again in the shower. Soap just seemed to spread it around! I wondered if maybe I should have tried rinsing my hands in vinegar instead!

The gumbo recipe also called for file powder (another thickener), which I didn't have, so it still ended up too runny. Next time I use that recipe I should definitely cut the liquid if I don't use file powder or roux.
