One of the nice things that Crystal, my new massage teacher, does is to take a break in the middle of class from teaching technique and review the anatomy of the major skeletal muscles that we are working on. She says she's heard feedback from former students that they would like this, so she decided to try adding it to the class format. We are taught the muscles during anatomy classes, but I think it is important to review them when you are in a position to physically work with them. It also makes a nice break in the four hours of class time.

Last night I learned that the calf muscles - the gastrocnemius and the soleus - are often called a second heart. This is because contraction of the calf muscles acts as a pump to assist the heart in pushing blood up into the body. This is why you can faint if you stand straight with your knees locked for too long. It briefly crossed my mind that this might be an answer to my insomnia. No, there must be an easier way!
