Willard is one creepy/scary movie. In the old style, which fits, since it is a remake of an old movie.
I'm pretty sure I caught references to several classic horror movies. I know I saw a reference to The Pit and the Pendulum. The comparisons to Psycho and The Birds are obvious but I think they were highlighted in a couple of scenes (did I see the body of a dead bird on the living room carpet?) And there was something about lots of clocks going off at once, which I really thought was a reference to a movie I haven't seen. Vertigo, perhaps?
Watched it in several sessions yesterday, ending last night. I really enjoyed it. It was deliciously scary and creepy. Though I have to say that the cats' catnip toy mouse lying on the floor gave me a shiver as I walked up to bed.
Edited to add:
A quick review of the Internet Movie Database reveals that Willard was produced by the creative team of Glen Morgan and James Wong, who also wrote the screenplays for a number of X-Files episodes, including (among others) the delightfully campy "Ice" and the gross-out fest "Home".
This explains:
1. The presence of an orange cat named Scully.
2. The campy nature of the film.
3. The humor and in-jokes.
4. Why I liked it when apparently every critic thought it was dumb and unscary.
