Comedy of errors

My neighbor lent me his aluminum extension ladder this weekend so and I could clean out the gutters and repair a downspout that had been pulled away from the siding by ivy that had been growing there. I think we might have been able to handle the job if it was a one-story house, but a two-story house made for a commedy of errors. For one thing, the ladder was surprisingly heavy for aluminum. For another, even not extended, the ladder is about 25 feet long. This combination proved to be too much for two nerds to handle.

At one point as the ladder started getting away from us while we were trying to move it, told me to put it down. However, I felt I was pretty much in the “down” position myself already, and was earnestly doing my best to keep the ladder from taking me further in that direction. I believe I said something to the effect of, “There’s a lot of ‘down’ here. Which particular ‘down’ did you have in mind??”

In the end, after careful consideration, we decided that hiring someone to clean the gutters was probably the best move, and that at the moment what was most needed was a stiff drink, and to forget the whole incident for the day.
