While getting ready to perform at the library benefit Saturday night, my troupe shared a green room with some stilt walkers and other performers with a small local circus. The stilt walkers were in various costumes, including some pirates, a crocodile, a guy in a tophat, Peter Pan, and various other assorted characters. There were also a couple of cages containing a rabbit and a mouse. I was preoccupied with getting my costume and makeup ready and I didn't really pay much attention to this odd assortment until I overheard someone say that the mouse was in the teapot. Understanding slid into place in my consciousness like one of those 3-d Magic Eye pictures coming into focus.
"It's a Dormouse, isn't it?" I asked the girl in the tophat who I now recognized as a Mad Hatter. She nodded. Then I saw the white rabbit carrying a watch and chain, and those two women wearing sheets attached to a dowel rod across their shoulders--why, they were nothing but a pack of cards!
Oh, yeah. My troupe director did mention that the theme of the benefit was "bringing literature to life", and the circus performers were going to be dressed as characters from books. She just didn't know what books. I identified Peter Pan, Alice In Wonderland, and Aladdin and the Magic Lamp. Oh, and Hansel, Gretel, and the Pied Piper were there as well.
